Oversize spare on OEM carrier. Need more support!

I have a 35" spare on my OEM tire carrier with an aftermarket bracket to make it fit. Now, of course the rubber supports don't do anything! I know I read somewhere that I could use bumpstops to add support to the tire. Or is there some other creative fix for more support? Does anyone have a pic of their setup?

Daystar has replacement stops that can be cut to size.

You can get them at your usual places such as Quadratec, 4WD.com, etc.

IMO, hit enough bumps with that weight hanging out there on the plastic support and you will be looking for a new rear door and/or bumper....

I agree. I had the Daystar cushions on a High Rock 4x4 Oversized Tire Carrier (WHICH I STRONGLY DISCOURAGE ANYONE FROM BUYING, EVER). Its ok on flat paved roads, but nothing but squeaks, moans and groans on the trail. Having all that weight on your back door is going to destroy your sanity AND your back door.

Rear bumpers w/ tire carriers are insanely expensive and worth every penny. Get that enormous weight off your back door as quick as you can.

I had the same issue of carrying a 35" on the tailgate. Bought the daystar longer bump stops, but they didn't even touch the tire. As posted above, it drove me crazy thinking of that weight on my gate. Sprung for a bumper and tire carrier last month. I still have the bumpstops in my garage. If you want them, pm me and I'll send them to you for the cost of shipping.

You can get thick rubber truck hose, cut to length and slipped over your stock rubber supports for next-to-nothing - except the time it takes to buy a length, measure and cut.

Thanks for the replies and the offer JDJK. I will just get the bumpstops for now and try and fab up something for extra support.
I'm the same way, I'm constantly looking in my rearview to see how much bouncing around my spare is doing while going over bumpy roads. It really bugs me to have that much weight on my hinges.
Obviously the way to go is the Teraflex hinge or a carrier.
Frustrated that I bought an ORF bumper last year without a carrier.

I had no issues on my 08. Used the daystars with 35-inch tire and ran my Jeep hard many times for over three years. Hit all kinds of bumps, ruts at high speeds playing on desert trails. Tire carrier and tailgate was just fine up to the day my Jeep was killed.

Have you tried mounting the spare without the extension bracket?
My 35" tire fits the stock carrier with no modifications other than the Daystar rubber things. The extension bracket will be the thing that causes the gate to be destroyed as it adds a lot of leverage to bracket.

You know, I never even tried it. There just might be enough room with my aftermarket bumper...

Hooray, I got a project for today! I'll get back to you...
