oil usage

2007 Jeep X Unlimited. 106,000 miles. Only have 3500 miles since last oil change and the warning chime has gone off and the warning indicator light on the dash has flickered on and off, but not frequently. Once I got these notices I checked the oil and it didnt even read on the dipstick. Ended up putting four quarts in before it registered on the dipstick. Know I have a severe knocking/rapping noise and my mechanic says I need a to replace the motor. Have tried several alternative methods- complete engine flush, heavier weight oil, some oil additives but the knock is still there. Has anyone else had this issue and if so, what did you do to remedy this. Would love to know. Thanks

When the oil pressure light comes on, the oil is almost gone.
Now that it's knocking, the damage is done.
In the past, I have replaced main and rod bearing without disassembling the engine. It's not a "best fix", but it can buy some time before a proper engine rebuild.
People have found inexpensive, low mileage 3.8's from those who have done the V8 swap.

For the other readers out there, check your dip sticks once in a while.
