New grears for $700 installed good price or sounds to good to be true?

Well Im getting ready to lift the jeep and need/want 5:13's well I was checking out craigslist just for jeep jk stuff and found this http://houston.craigslist.org/pts/1125035051.html the guy claims that he does several JK's a week , and this is parts and labor for both front and rear. I hope N2Rock will chime in since this is up in his neck of the woods.

So is this a great deal or too good to be true?

Allen put my 4.88's in about 3.5 yrs ago. Haven't had a problem since. I'd 100% recommend him.

I am going to regear to 5.13's and will be taking it back to him.

He's done several installs for Jeeps in our club and I have not heard of a single issue with the quality of his work.

Thats good to know, I was wondering if anyone here has used them. So do you have a JK?

No, I don't. I still have the TJ in my profile, which I daily drove for around 50k miles after the gear setup.

I don't know of anyone in our club that has had him regear a JK yet, so I can't offer any input on that specifically. I can't imagine it being any different than a TJ, YJ, CJ setup, which I know he has done many, many, many times.

I'm sure someone has a JK that he's done, I'll ask around in our club.

I heard about him from a buddy of mine. I don't personally know anyone that has had it done. The friend of mine told me the guy is doing it so cheap in an effort to drum up business from the JK's. The price sure is tempting.

It does sound good, but I have always been the "you get what you pay for" and the "if it sounds to good to be true it probably is" kinda guy.

it is 249 Drivetrain Service (website: 249drivetrain.com)

I talked to Redneckhouston last night, and he knows these guys. Says they do good quality work. So no reason to not trust them. The only thing about the price is they are not using Superior gears - I forgot what brand he said they were using, but they are a less expensive gear and are not as strong as Superiors (and other more expensive gears). So in a way, you do get what you pay for. Now if you're not going to be really hard on the gears, then the price is a good price

N2, when I had mine done the shop had a hard time finding Superior 4:88's, and mentioned that Superior was brand labeling the same gear under a different name. Possibly the same? I ended up using them in the front, or my JK would have been up on his rack indefinitely. So far no issues.

Will I see you @ Spring Creek Saturday?

You might want to search some other forums. I read something last night about the "houston shop that advertised gears on craigslist" and it wasn't complimentary. I have no personal knowledge one way or the other. I don't recall which forumit was on either.

My only concern would be that given the cost of the parts there isn't much labor included and getting gears set up is a good bit of trial and error. Is he willing to loose money on your job to do the job right? What kind of guarantee does he offer? Will he use Superior gears if requested (and if you pay the difference in cost)? FWIW I broke two CM axle shafts (an Alloy USA front and Superior rear) and in both cases the 5.13 Superior ring and pinion were fine.
