New diesel as early as 2008!!!!???

Is this correct?

I was serching on other forums and a couple of people have sources that say there will be a new diesel engine by 2008?? is this right, or is this old news??




Also, with the weight of a diesle and the higher diesel fuel prices, would mpg gain be 1 or maybe 2 mpg???

higher fuel prices dont affect mpg....

i think more people want a diesel for its massive torque output, rather than getting better mileage

Nope, and that's exactly why you haven't had a diesel in the past in the US.

In the Uk (and Europe) we had the very excerllent VM 2.5 TD unit in the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee (I think). This was purly for economy reasons.

I would guess that a diesel should offer 'significant' gains in mpg over a petrol engine. Typically most models see ~25-35% better.

I talked with some of the engineers at camp jeep and while they could not give me a direct answer they said they would not be supprised to see the diesel in the 2008 wrangler, if that helps at all.

This is ALL speculation. We DO know that there is a CRD motor over seas. Thats all we know.

All we can do is WAIT and see if next year it arrives. Or the year after. That is the only real way to know.

A small V8 (like the 4.7 in the WJ/WK/XK) may be a more likly possiblity for one reason: emmisions (sp?)

If the CRD does make it into the JK I would exect to see nice fuel gains particularly on the highway. I know it has brick like aero working against it but I could see 25-27 at highway speeds. But city would only be 1 maybe 2 MPG better. Again all speculation if it even happened.

Better gas mileage is important for off roading as well when you consider the range you can go on one tank.
Another benefit of diesel for of roading is fording capabilities; since a diesel doesn't have an ignition system you don't have to worry about water leaking into it killing your engine while in water.


That said, unless DC is planning on putting the 3.0 CRD in the JK I don't expect to see one in the JK until at least 09. As far as I know, the 3.0 CRD is the only diesel that DC has certified with the EPA.
Of course, the 3.0 CRD would be incredible in the JK.

Here are the specs on the 3.0 CRD I found. It would be a nice upgrade, but not enough. I still want the 4.7.

The new 3.0-liter CRD engine, built by Mercedes-Benz, produces 215 hp (160 kW) @ 3800 rpm and 376 lb.-ft. torque (510 N•m) @ 1600-2800 rpm and gets an estimated fuel economy of 19 miles city and 23 miles highway.

I'm curious what you think the 4.7 holds over the new 3.0L CRD?

The 3.0L CRD will not fit in the JK.The motor and trany are to big and it being a MB it's going cost alot of $$$$$$.

The 3.0 is going in the WK I don't see what won't fit about the JK. Who cares give me the 2.8 CRD and I'll chip it!

The 3.0 would be a better engine for the Wrangler. The 4.7 makes 235/300 compared to 215/376 of the diesel.
