This is what happens when your $1,800 Warn PowerPlant becomes nothing more than an overweight air compressor.

It should also be noted that I typically air down to about 10psi. In this instance, that wasn't letting me float on the hard-packed snow, so I dropped it further to 4psi. As soon as I had gotten out of the worst of the snow, I aired back up to 8psi and continued on. I would not recommend running at 4psi for very long, but I'm also not afraid to do so if necessary.

And here are some photos:

Just being adventurous. We were very well prepared for the worst case scenario, so there wasn't any real danger present. This was our annual early spring scouting trip to gauge how soon the mountains will be open for four-wheeling.

What trail were you doing out of curiosity? I run around Gunnison, Lake City, Mt. Crested Butte, and Buena Vista once in awhile. I like to know before I get out there for the summer/fall how it's looking.

That was Forest Road 390 that heads out to the Winfield ghost town. Ever been there? We were stopped about 100 yards shy of Winfield. The hard packed snow from the snowmobiles makes it pretty easy to float if the tires are aired down low enough. Once the ice starts to melt and you'll be driving on true snow again, it'll be harder to make it through. I give it until the first half of May before we'll be able to make it all the way to Winfield without trouble.

I haven't been that close to Leadville in awhile. I know I've been around there though because along 24 there are a lot of old mining trails and towns. What is the elevation there? I tried to find it on ghosttowns.com but couldn't. If you have a run again around these parts in May or later, send me a PM. I love to check out new towns and get out with other Jeepers in CO. And if you ever make it down to Curecanti, be sure to hit me up as well, I've been all around there.

Accent Color Needed

I will (finally!) be welding together my ACE Weld-On Rock Rails this coming weekend, and I've decided to use Monstaliner bedliner to protect them. I've been toying with the idea of an accent color for as long as I've had the Jeep, and now is the time to actually make the decision on an accent color. I'm truly torn as to whether I should go for something loud or something subtle. (Maybe something in between?)

As a colorblind man, I'd really appreciate any feedback that y'all have. I would initially apply the color to my rock rails and roll cage, and possibly to my fender flares at a later date.

Here are the colors I'm leaning toward at the moment:

Lady in Red:

Pyroclastic:

Medium Quartz Gray:

Thanks! I decided on black after ncb's comment. Ordered two quarts, even though it should only take one quart to complete. That way I can do something else without ordering another quart.

You're braver than me.

I won't go near that toxic white stuff all over the mountains and northern latitudes. The fumes cause things like burning lungs, aching joints and imminent death....

I finally got around to hiring a local redneck to help me weld together my ACE Engineering Rock Rails. I got the Builder's Kit rather than the Pre-constructed rails since I (a) got a great price on them, (b) wanted rails that weld to the frame instead of bolting on, and (c) wanted to be able to customize the angle of the rails. The guy I hired did a pretty good job and let me take photos along the way so I could do a write up.

Fortunately, the write up is nice and short:
Step 1) Buy the Pre-constructed ACE Weld-On rails instead.
Step 2) Drink beer.
Step 3) Weld on the rails.

This whole thing is going to end up costing me about $180 more than if I had gone with ACE's Pre-constructed weld-on package. The upside is that I get to customize the rail angle, I get to keep the Rubi rails, and I get to spend more time tinkering.

At this point, the rails are built and primed. I'll be getting ncb's help in the coming days with bed lining the rails, then back to the redneck to get them welded to the frame.

I also picked up a full set of JKUR springs (17/18 front, 58 rear) that ncb is going to help me swap. Since I'm not wanting to swap shocks, do y'all think I should grab a set of Teraflex's shock extensions?
