More of a Tinkering Thread than a Build Thread (smcutter)

Summer is here and I've found plenty of things to do to my 2012 Rubicon. When I bought it in October 2011, I committed to keeping it stock for at least one year, with the only permissible exceptions being a bumper and winch. You all know how those commitments end up going...

I don't have the welding skills of VoodooJK, the workshop of molshove, the insane technical prowess of jwmbishop, or the big budget of Brent_f70. But what I do have is a little time here and there to customize my Rubicon to my own liking, and a desire to share that with the JeepForum community.

This will be a slow process, but I hope you will enjoy it and that it sparks some creative ideas in your head.

Mirror Mount

This wasn't my first mod, but it's the only mod that I have photos of on my computer at the moment.

I went to Home Depot and picked up a 3/8" threaded rod, five 3/8" nuts, two 5/16" washers, and Loctite Threadlocker. Then I went to an Auto Parts store and got the mirror shown in the photo below. The most difficult part was finding a mirror that was intended to () mount on a pole instead of using an adhesive sticker. The mirror I got was intended to be mounted to something thicker than 3/8" so I just put two nuts together to make the threaded rod thicker. I'm going to take an angle grinder to the threaded rod sometime this week.

When I assembled it, I added Threadlocker on the bolts that are above ALL of the hinges. I very nearly put Threadlocker on the bolt that is on top of the lower hinge, but I caught myself before I applied the stuff. To remove the mirror mount, it's as easy as unscrewing the bottom two bolts and pulling it up and out. Couldn't be easier, and it looks good too (if I do say so myself).

EDIT: I've stopped using three nuts to hold it on. Now I just use one nut on top of the top hinge (which is Threadlocker'd), and one nut/washer below the bottom hinge. There is plenty of tension to keep it tight without having a nut in between.

Plasti-Dip Console

After 14 miles on an incredibly dusty, washboarded road last weekend, I decided I wanted some way to mitigate the dust coverage on the dash. I had also been getting pretty tired of the monotonous black interior and wishing it had a two-tone interior. So I put four coats of tan Plasti-Dip on the hard, smooth plastic portion of the center dash area. Removing the dash required the removal of six bolts (7mm socket plus a 6" extender). I'm very pleased with the results, since it looks nice and it will make the dust appear less visible over the summer. Taping it off was a challenge, but the rest was a piece of cake!

I know y'all are probably sick of hearing about Plasti-Dip, but I'm even more sick of the micro-scratches on my black paint. I think I'm going to Plasti-Dip my entire hood matte black and replace the Rubicon decal with something a little more creative. As far as I can find on the internet, Plasti-Dip works pretty darn well for protecting against new scratches. The way I see it, it's like adding a really thick layer of wax.

So now I just have to decide what hood decal I want to have made. I was thinking of replacing RUBICON with ROCKIES since I spend a bit more time in the Rocky Mountains than I do on the Rubicon Trail. But I don't love it quite enough. If anyone reads this (doubtful), any responses that help spark some creativity would be appreciated!

I'm leaning toward ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ as a hood decal if I can get it in the proper Greek script. Otherwise I may go with "PEACEMAKER."

I just heard back from the guy at pixeldecals.com and he sent me a proof of the following design. I told him to go ahead and make it!

I don't get it...help my pea-brain, please

I love the center console and shifter boot of your Jeep so much better than mine...was staring at my center console before I reinstalled it today, thinking, "man, this is one dirty, mangey looking piece of ****." I thought about spraying it with krylon fusion, but that just drew even more dust than the plastic dash (when I did this on my YJ). I always forget about this plasti-dip crap you guys coat everything with...maybe I will have to try

Ever watch the movie 300? Molon Labe was King Leonidas' response to the Persians when they were told to surrender their weapons. It roughly translates to "Come and take them."

Plasti-Dip definitely isn't a fix-all, but it's pretty useful and completely removable. Just for kicks, I tried it out on my Android's OtterBox the other day. I put three coats on and waited for it to dry, then decided I didn't like it and removed it. It wasn't as easy to remove from the OtterBox plastic as I thought it would be, but it's definitely easy to remove from the center console. You'll only need one can to cover the center console and then some.

If it's easily removable...is putting it in a high-traffic area, like the center console, a bad idea (chip and peel away and look like hell)?

Maybe having a wife results in higher friction being applied to the center console. I don't find myself repeatedly rubbing my *** against it very frequently.

But even if I did, I'm actually surprised how durable it is. It will peel off if you rub the sides, but as far as I can tell it's pretty impervious on the center of the application.
