Driving in deep soft sand is more about floatation than anything else. A more aggressive tire is just going to dig a bigger hole, not provide more traction.

No - it is not a custom diesel conversion - you can order it directly from the dealer
The engine comes from VM !

It is the stock European bumper - I have only "modified" it a little bit for mounting the winch

Bah! Why do the Europeans get the cool versions of stuff? I love that bumper, and ~300 to ~340 lb-ft of torque would be nice sometimes...

So he'd be better off with racing slicks? At least airing down would help, surely, right?

Airing down would definitely help. Slicks is too extreme, but something like a paddle tire is best for dunes etc...
Riverbed sand is a whole other animal though.

Only thing that would have helped me there, a winch. Plain and simple. I may have gotten a few feet further with some "other" tire. Either way it was a lose lose.
