I have only had our 09 Sahara 2door for a month. Love it !
Anyway we recieved 2 key/remotes with the Jeep. I lock the Jeep with the remote and when I come back to get in.... it will not work..period. I have to unlock it the old fashoin way (hahaha) So I switched keys and the other key is doining it from time to time. ARGH !!
Took the Jeep and both keys to dealership. They tested the keys and said there is nothing wrong with them. But they won't look at the Jeep because there appears to be nothing wrong. Here is the funny part.... They told me to bring it in when it does it again ??? How??? Once I get into the Jeep...start it.. drive it there.... the problem is gone! Everytime it stops working... I manually unlock it, the alarm goes off, I start it, drive home, And it works fine for a couple days.
So basically they told me they can't do nothing unless it repeats this problem while in their possesion.
I know this is not any big mechanical issue, but it is annoying. The keyless is a nice touch when it works. I was just curious if anyone else has had this problem and what did you do to fix it???
Absolutely agree new battery, and if that does not work ask the dealer to reprogram the fobs to the Jeeps computer. Do you carry both fobs to determine if the issue impacts both of them at the same time?
Get a spare key too, you'll need it if you ever need to reprogram the keys. If you loose one, you'll be out some serious cash, so the spare is cheap insurance. But none of this solves your fob prob.
Well I just spent $5 on 1 battery to see if it was the battery and sure enough............... this did not help So I went and fetched the other remote with the original battery and it worked ?? What the ?!?!!??
So I start the Jeep up and then shut it off. The key with the new battery now works fine ?? It's like the Jeep doesn't want to recongize the key transponders all the time. I acts up when it feels like it.
Can I reprogram them myself or do I have to take to dealership and have them look at me like I crazy again.
Could be the wireless control module which receives the signal from the key remote. Have the dealer reprogram your keys to the wcm. This should take care of the problem.
Mine does this at least once a week. One remote does not work, the other does. Replaced batteries, no help. It is like the computer "forgets" the remote, then remembers it for a week or so and forgets it again. I haven't even bothered taking it to the dealer, I know the run around I would get from them.
It's like the Jeep forgetting the settings I have on the locks. I set it, a month later the settings change. Again, can't prove it to the dealer, so I know I'll just get blown off.
I've noticed pulling the battery and putting it back in will make it work again, at least until the next time. Lasted about a week then it wouldn't remember the remote again. So I get in, set off the alarm, start the Jeep, drive, remote works the next time I stop. I don't get it.
I had a similar intermittent problem with m '08...started at about 15,000 miles... The dealer's tech was baffled for a couple hours until he eventually found an obscure technical bulletin that talked about static and the wireless control module. Funny thing is they went to exchange modules, the new one was bad so they put the old one back in and the problem went away on it's own...
Mines been doing this crap for about a year and a half now.
Every time I take it to the dealer, which is a royal PITA,
it puts on it's best behavior and they can't duplicate the
problem. I lock it, or can't, go into the store/house, come
back out and it won't unlock. I have to do it with the key
and the alarm goes off my neighbors, coworkers, friends
etc just know to expect it now. It sucks. I pretty much
just don't lock it anymore. And of course that nice fancy
remote start won't work either...
I can't take it...I have had this 2008 jeep 4 door wrangler to dealer 4 times...Replaced the keys worked for a day. Replaced the wireless control moduel, worked for a day. The remote will on ocassion unlock/lock the doors if I hold it for 20 seconds standing next to it. Sometimes not...Remote start will not work at all.....what else could it be?
The only thing I've really noticed with mine is that it really only works if the front of the jeep is facing me. Side angle remote starts are limited in range, and coming at it from the rear is almost pointless until I'm right next to it.
I blamed it on the spare tire, and the placement of the antenna,(must be hidden).
If I'm facing the Jeep it seems to work well and at a decent range.
Had me baffled for a bit though, thought it was not responding, or broken, then realized it worked much better from full frontal.
Not saying that is your problem, just stating an observation.
I have stood 2 feet in front of the grill and the remote still does not work. I have to get in, set off the alarm, turn the key in the ignition to disarm the alarm. The next time I go to unlock the Jeep it works (it never happens for me when locking the Jeep though). I think it is the memory in the computer.
I do notice the range works better from the front than the side or rear though.
That Is The Trick!!!!!!omg I Can Not Believe It...but Is There A Way To Get Better Reception On This. I Talked To The Dealer They Said It Should Open From Any Angle....but He Also Said The Antenna Is Part Of The W.c.m. That Has Been Replaced. So What Can I Do To Boost The Power To Get It To Open From All Angles????? Thank You
That Was It I Have To Stand In Front Of The Jeep!!!! Talked To The Dealer About Not Being Able To Open Locks From All Angles He Said Not Normal...but The Antenna Is Located In The Wireless Control Module And They Replaced It Already. So What Can I Do To Get More From The Antenna To Open The Truck Doors From The Sides Or From Entering The Rear?

My MRS works from any angle. It works from the rear. It works when I am inside buildings and the Jeep is outside of buildings. It works from in the middle of the grocery store. It works when I am standing in my garage, with the door closed. It works....pretty much under any reasonable conditions.
Mine 09 has done it for almost a year now. It is NOT the battery. If you pop the back off the key and then put it back together it works again. No need to wiggle the battery or the connectors. Its like it resets itself when it is split from the battery. I showed this to the dealer and they said that both keys have to be not working and then sent back to Jeep. They also said that Jeep was denying warranty work on the keys if they showed signs of being taken apart. Its a catch 22 because when you take the non working keys to dealer they just pop them open and put a new battery in them and say they are fixed.
Oh stop it you two, am I going to have to get your father?
So I took mine to the dealer yesterday. This thread reminder me of how fed up I am and I have off work for a few days. What do you know, it acted up in front of them! He took my key inside the shop somewhere and came out saying the tester they use to see if the key is emitting a signal indicated the key was malfunctioning. I told him it didn't matter which key I used. Sooo...he ordered two new keys that should be in today. I am very skeptical though. It seems that it would be very coincidental that both keys are having this erratic behavior. I expressed my skepticism and he said, "Lets start there. If it's still malfuncioning we will check other areas." Well you know what's going to happen. It will work fine until I get home! Hahaha! I'll keep you all posted.
The dealer called me back yesterday and said there is documentation with Jeep to replace the antenna on the passenger door. So I am taking the jeep back to the dealer for the 5th time and now having the antenna replaced the is for the RKE.....Let you know what happens. Your right though, it is intermittent, I take it in it the have replaced my keys, my WCM, and now antenna. But as soon as I go to get in it again after leaving the dealer it doesn't work. It did work standing in front of it yesterday.....But then it snowed on the Jeep and it did not work. It is almost like the antenna it not getting the signal. So sick of going back to the dealer. How does that lemon law work? I bought this 2008 with 6400 miles on it 3 weeks ago from a dealer. Still has 2 years of warranty. Does it only apply to new cars? I will have been to the dealer 5 times after today.
So I picked up my two new keys today and they take it in back to program them. He comes out 30 minutes later and says it's the receiver module. I knew it wasn't the friggin keys but you have to let things run their course. New module ordered. I'll update this after it's all installed and programmed. Fingers, toes, nuts crossed...
I'm starting to think this is a known bug with no specific cure.
My '09 Rubi started doing it almost from day one. The funny thing is it took me a while to discover that when my key wouldn't work, my wife's would....every time.
Additionally I discovered that once I got in and started the Jeep, my key would work....every time. It would continue to work fine for a while and then the process would repeat.
These things use some sort of rolling code algorythm. Right now my guess is that my key probably gets the buttons pressed in my pocket and perhaps the code rolls to an unexpected code and the Jeep won't respond.
Due to the fact that I've seen so many threads on the subject dating all the way back to 2007, and due to the fact that the solution has yet to be documented, I'm just going to live with the inconvenience for now.:brickwall
I went to dealer to now have antenna replaced, it did nothing for the problem, so they ripped out the dash to trace the wire it had been located in a area with obstruction and a solder that was preventing it from receiving the signal. It works great now. It is simply the wire placement from the antenna.!!!!!!!!!!
Nice! Now was yours working erratically, or not at all? Mine either works or doesn't. When it works I can be a good distance away and indoors. That leads me to believe it's not an obstruction but a complete malfunction.
