Joe's 2008 Rubicon Unlimited Build Thread

My Jeep turned 2 last month. It's now got 55K miles on the odometer and it is in desperate need of new tires (I'm still running the factory BFG KM's).

As you can see by my mileage, the JK is my daily driver. I want to be able to hit medium-difficulty trails and have enough clearance to get over rocks on the trail. I don't want to slash my onroad performance, so I decided on 35's.

On the way:

- Rock Krawler 3.5" Mid-Arm Flex Lift Kit
- Bilstien 5100 Shocks
- GoodYear MTR/Kevlar 35x12.5x15
- Procomp 152 Steel Wheels, 15x8 3.75" Backspacing

My plan is to install the lift on Black Friday. I'll post photo's as the build takes shape!

Wow, it's been a while since I've been here. Looks like I never updated this thread. I've now got 108K miles and i'm in for "build #3".

My first built was as above. My 2nd build was at 105K early this year, rebuilding my whole front end due to bad death wobble. Build #3 was inspired by my trip this summer thru the rubicon.

Here's what she looked like in July:

Here's what she has now for Mods:

> Rock Krawler 3.5" Mid-Arm Flex Lift Kit
> Bilstien 5100 Shocks
> GoodYear MTR/Kevlar 35x12.5x17 (2nd Set)
> Procomp 152 Steel Wheels, 17x8 3.75" Backspacing
> PSC Brawler Lite front Bumper
> Currie CurrectLync Front steering w/Drag Link Flip
> Synergy Grade 8 Hardware Kit
> Synergy Upper Track Bar Brace
> ORH Top
> 12V Guy Switch Panel
> Smitty Built Center Console
> MasterCraft Grab Handles
> cooltech Towbar Lighting
> Towbar

In Progress Now:

> Bink's Fab Custom Fold-Down Tailgate
> Artec Front Axle Truss
> Reid High Steer Knuckles
> Synergy Ball Joints
> PSC Evap Skid
> PSC Brawler Sliders
> PSC Crusher Corners (Mod'd with Hinge Delete)
> PSC Rear Bumper/Tire Carrier
> PSC Narrow Front Fenders
> PSC Standard Rear Fenders
> XRC10 Winch
> Rigid D2 Driving Fogs
> Rigid E10 Flood

Known Issues to deal with:
> Steering Box (leaking)
> Skidplates (Synergy?)

Here are some progress photos:

Artec Truss and Currie Tie Rod:

Tear Down and a pile-o-parts:

Corner's getting the Hinge Delete:

Oh, and this was my inspiration for the tailgate mod:

I decided to go down here (at the red arrow):

And it ended up like this:

Lol I know exactly where that is, buddy went down that path luckily for him he had no rear tire hanging. Still a little drop. Look forward to the progress, sooner rather than later.

^ The Shop is Bink's Fabrication in Salida, CA. They are doing all the metal work

Sneak peek at the Aluminum drop-down tailgate:

That tailgate looks awesome, will they be manufacturing them in the near future or is it a one-off just for your Jeep? The rear of your Jeep is looking terrific to say the least.

It was a custom fabrication for my Jeep; however, they are paying close attention to what it took to make and how much interest they get based on people seeing my jeep. We're using jeep hood hinges and Dodge tailgate latches/etc which are surprisingly expensive components. You can't tell from that photo (because it's just being held in place), but there was alot of bending and shaping to match the angles of the jeep. The factory rear tailgate is actually radiused out in a slight arc across the rear which they matched with this tailgate.

Forgot about the JKs not having a flat panel anywhere so yeah, I can just imagine all the work it took to make that tailgate.

That's going to be a hard question to answer. If I never break/bend the axle tube then it was worth it, right? It's kinda hard to prove a negative. I hope to never find out! That said, it's a very well thought out piece and very affordable for what you get.
