JK Recall 11/19/09 - Mopar Towbar '07 and '08s

I just happened to check for recalls and noticed a new recall released 11/19/09 (yesterday!)

Check for your Jeep:
Jeep - Contact Us

Info:
SAFETY RECALL J24- MOPAR TOW BAR

Problem: The MOPAR brand tow bar, purchased for your Jeep Wrangler, may allow the towed vehicle to become detached from the tow vehicle. This can result in a crash without warning.

Fix: Chrysler will repair your vehicle free of charge. To do this, your deal will place the cross tube, vertical hitch pins, hair pins, horizontal hitch pins, frame mounting brackets, and fasteners. This work will take about 1 hour to complete. However, additional time may be necessary depending on vehicle schedules.

What you must do: Simply contact your dealer right away to schedule a service appointment. Remember to bring this letter, your vehicle (whoops, I forgot my vehicle.. lol) and the complete tow bar kit with you to your dealer.

What exactly is this piece? The rear?

The 2008 Jeep Wrangler is not so much an SUV as it is an experience. It's slow and loud, handles poorly, has crummy interior materials and features doors that provide virtually no crash protection. But when it comes to off-road performance, the Wrangler is simply the best choice available.

It sounds like they are talking about a front tow bar to tow the Jeep with, not a rear hitch reciever to tow a trailer with!

That's what I am thinking also. I'll check with my dealer to confirm Monday.

Even if it is, I can't have it repaired because I have a bumper hitch welded to my front for a beach rack. Wouldn't want to have to re-weld it - if that's the piece they are talking about..

Figured I'd post this so people know about it

It is the tow bar for flat towing the JK behind another vehicle. The recall will come up for every VIN number because they do not know who bought the tow bars.

I purchased one and used it for a couple months since there was nothing else available at the time. But the design was so bad that I modified it after the first tow so it was safe to use. I sold it as soon as Roadmaster finally can out with proper setup for the JK.

For the recall they will replace the two frame brackets, the cross bar and the associated connecting parts.

True.

I picked up my JK Friday for some warranty work, and this was the last item on the receipt, even though I've never had this tow bar. I was going to call my service guy Monday to see what this was for, now I don't have to.

Thanks for clearing it up.. They should of been more detailed, like, "This doesn't apply if you don't have the mopar front tow bar" etc etc.

I am a little confuse. Are they talking about the two tow hooks on the front bumper? or the rear tow hitch? It seems like there is more to replace than just the tow hooks .. and if so, I would imagine every JK regardless whether it has the tow hooks now or in the future. What if I decided to get the tow hooks in a few years?

I assume this is what the recall is for.. Just for towing your Jeep behind a truck or RV....

Sounds right

Is there anyway to get this recall removed? Or will it stay on there forever unless it's fixed?

That is more like it. The recall notice is a little vague.

I'll let you know what it is next week. I'm scheduled for Monday. If it is that bar then it is a waste of time since I never purchased that. Since my Roadmaster bolts directly to the frame that shouldn't be a problem.

I just received my notice in the mail. It is the tow bar to allow you to trailer the jeep behind another vehicle.

If it doesn't apply I would just call the dealer they may be able to do it over the phone. Worse case is to drive in they look and give you a printout of it being fixed cus there was nothing to do.

Hopefully thats all it is cus I do have a tow hitch.
