I wish I knew what the tub looked like underneath and inside and what exactly was behind the firewall.

This shows how there are two "walls" that make up the firewall; at least at as high up as I made this hole. In there, a little to the right is an airvent that I almost ended up drilling through before I did a bit more research on this.

Not sure where exactly you'd route the intake through to the cab, but I'm sure its possible and I don't think it's a bad idea at all. Theres a pretty good amount of room under the stock battery tray fyi, just watch the exhaust. And you wouldn't have to drill any holes in the cowl, or the fender, or the hood. Getting down in there would probably be a pain though.

As for noise, before I was done with the snorkel I drove around for about a month and could hear the air at that side of the Jeep, no big deal. plus i have a soft top and offroad tires so what's a little more noise

Thanks Chris. Yea, I looked behind the glove box and I think I see the vent you're talking about. Everything is real tight, which isn't too much of a surprise. I'll do some more research. I'm not overly concerned with noise, that ship has sailed(no carpet, muffler relocated and replaced w/5" round magnaflow).

I ended up spending probably just as much as an aftermarket snorkel would cost.

A lot of this was because I bought parts that I didn't use (or ruined and had to buy again); and the places I bought the rubber grommets and pipe caps had a minimum order so I had to buy around 30-40 each when I only needed 2-3. This actually worked out because I screwed up about 2-3 of these.

I also didn't have any tools before this so I had to buy those too, but those are good to have anyway.

my question is if you run this type of custom cowl, do you need to run a filter at all? or is there a filter within the inlet? Just wondering because on the other snorkel systems the air gets forced through a engin filter?

You did a great job and have inspired me to do this!!!! it's in the planning now. I'm going to get my guys to mandrel bend 3" alum for the tubbing....... or cut sections and lay some nice welds

but seriously great job takes guts to cut holes in the cowl

A filter should still be used no matter what.

This looks great! it's the only style snorkel I would even consider. That being said. I know Rugged Ridge released the drawings of their modular snorkel that will be using this location. Their kit is due for a spring/early summer 2011 release. Maybe you had something to do with their inspiration! 2 thumbs up for innovation and good old DIY skills.

THE OP HAS SOME HUGE BALLS TO DRILL LIKE THAT INTO THE COWL. MY HAT IS CERTAINLY OFF TO YOU. Heck I even feel I am quite handy but it takes real balls to drill into a nicely paint outside surface of a newer vehicle. EXECELENT JOB!!

I left the air filter as is. no modification. I did change the airbox though (the plastic box that the filter sits in), I changed the location of the airbox "snorkel" outlet and I tied the airbox into the engine breather and axle breather hoses.
