Does the JK stand for anything? - It does not mean Just Kidding as some people have suggested.

Something popped, now my steering is loose to the left.

Symptom: I was making a left-hand turn at an intersection and during the turn, I heard something pop on the front passenger side of the Jeep. Now my steering wheel is loose towards the left. The Jeep still seems to turn okay, but I've got to turn the wheel more for left turns and sometimes it causes the ESP to engage.

Fix: Common problem. The track-bar mount on the axle has been known to break the welds. Take the Jeep to the dealership for re-weld (under warranty), get denied and laugh as they offer a completely unnecessary alternative solution that'll cost you thousands of dollars and waste copious amounts of your time), or have an offroad shop build some gussets and weld that sucker up properly.

The grill is made of plastic! - You are right. In the case of a major hit in very cold weather from a large rock, the plastic might crack, or in extreme cases break. Cherokee, Grand Cherokee and other Jeeps also have plastic grills on them, and in general they have faired fairly well over the years on trail and on the city streets and highways. It is part of the cost-savings / weight savings on the new JK.

The auto door-locks are driving me crazy. How do I make them not automagically lock the doors? - Shut the doors and turn the ignition key from "off" to "on" (stop turning the key at the point just before the engine starts). Do this five times. On the fifth time the key should be in the "on" position, push up on the power door lock.

To set for all doors to unlock together, follow the same proceedure, except press up on the power door lock 2 times.

Note: It has been said that it might take 6 turns of the ignition key to make the computer recognize the new door-lock desire.

I want more power. Is there going to be other options for engines? - At this point in time the only engine options from the factory are the gas engine in North America and a diesel or gas in Europe (and the rest of the world). There are companies that are installing Hemi engines into new JK's, but there is no official word from Jeep that they will do that from the factory. There are issues related to the CAFE standards that will need to be worked out prior to having more power from the factory in the JK. There are companies that are building superchargers for the JK's engine right now, and should be available to the public shortly.

My Jeep hates the cold! - This is especially true for the standard transmission Jeeps. The shift-boots can stiffen up at temperatures below freezing. To help remedy this situation, start your Jeep and shift the transfer-case into neutral. Slowly work the gears from first to 5th (or 6th if equipp'd) and back to 1st again. Do this over about 5 minutes (or while you are removing ice / snow from the exterior of your Jeep). You may notice your engine RPM dropping with the load of the transmission - this is normal. This proceedure will warm up the fluids in the transfer case prior to putting significant load on it, and help to warm up the fluids in the transfer-case as well.

“Sched. Out November” means that if you have any of the above ordered then your dealer will not even have a possible allocation of your vehicle until the December allocation is issued. That means that the next possible build date you will have is for December Build. December build should start in the last quarter of November.

Chrysler does not give priority to sold orders other than building them first for a dealer. They do not get put ahead of other dealers orders. Some might think this is not fair, but it is. Each dealer gets a certain amount of allocation based on previous sales. This gives each dealer the appropriate amount of vehicles based on sales history.

If the factory did just build any sold order ahead of other for-stock units, what would stop me from just putting a bunch of names on every order and then getting a ton of Wranglers built why every other dealer just had to wait? That is why each dealer is allocated a certain amount, and that allocation covers sold orders as well.

It is very important to discuss this with the dealer when ordering a vehicle. Asking questions about their allocation in past months, what they expect their allocation to be, and how many other sold orders are in their pipeline are very important.



A little bit more on allocation:

Allocation comes out on each Monday 4 times a month. So if there is 5 weeks then the 5th week is skipped. Allocation is issued by quarter for the following month of build dates. So allocation that I receive this coming Monday (October 23rd) will be for the 4th quarter build dates of November.

We get allocation for both 2 door Wranglers and 4 Door Wranglers. Last week I received an allocation for 2 of the 4-door and 5 of the 2-door. That means that I was able to get 2 of the Unlimited’s scheduled based on the regulations listed above. The mix can very week to week for many reasons.

Allocation priority is given to sold orders for each dealership and will usually get built quicker, but they will not be placed in a priority position above any other dealership.

"Good "rule of thumb" calculation is to mutiply .12 by your tire diameter. (.12 X 38" = 4.56) (see more formulas at bottom of page)

The below table can be used to get a rough idea on gear ratios. The colors represent ideal RPM's at highway speeds (65). For highway cruising and best fuel economy stay towards the yellow (2600 rpm), around town daily driving is color coded green (2800 rpm), and for better towing power or just more 4-low power use the ratios near the red (3100 rpm). These calculations are assuming a manual transmission with a 1:1 ratio. If you drive an automatic your RPMs will be slightly higher, and the opposite is true if you have overdrive (your RPMs will be slightly lower)."

[How To] Install Remote Start in 08-09 Wrangler JK
 
This is my install write-up from my 2009 Sahara. I ordered the kit part# 82211437AC, which is a factory kit for 08-09, from a chrysler dealership on ebay. Since it was specified for the 08-09 model year, I assume earlier models are different. Below are a few pics to give you an idea. If you have any questions, I will answer the best that I can.

Before receiving the kit, I was talking with a tech at the dealership and he said that the jeep wont start until its programmed and that I may have to tow it in. Well, I wasn't thrilled with that and got thinking that there had to be another way. The way I described the installation below, will still allow you to drive the jeep to a dealership to do the programming. The guy that did the programming at the dealership updated the vin number on my jeep so its included in the system and warranty, From the link below, I printed the programming pages and took them with me to the dealership which helped because initially when he was trying to get it to program through the computer, it wasn't working. It would arm and disarm but wouldn't start. He came and told me about it, and I then told him about the pages on the seat that I brought. He went back, read through it and that's when he saw that the VIN had to be updated through chryslers system in order to work. Anyway, after all that, it worked great. You should be able to install this entire system in about an hour. Especially with my write-up.

I initially wasn't going to install the hood switch at all, basically because I just didn't want to and wasn't worried about someone being under the hood or anything else. Im the only one that will be working on my jeep and also I figured it was just a simple ground or open type of switch. But after receiving the kit and taking a closer look at it, there is a little resister inside the switch between the two pins. So even though the hood is closed and the switch is open, the circuit is still completed and it still sees a very small amount of ground. So the computer still checks for a completely/correctly installed harness. After coming back from the dealership, I also tested this by disconnecting the ground wire at the ground post from the switch, held the hood switch down and tried to start it and it wouldn't. So, youre going to need the hood switch. It only takes a few minutes to install it and is safer to have it anyway.

While I was installing the antenna module. I walked down the street to more than a 300' and was still able to start by remote. So the location I put it in works great.

Also, on a side note, the tech asked if I wanted any other changes with the computer, like the locking, unlocking etc. I already knew how to disable the seat belt chime, stop the horn from honking while arming, and only the driver door to unlock when disarming. So I brought up the doors locking thing at 20 mph. I dont like that and is just more wear and tear. Anyway, he was able to disable that feature as well, which is nice.

Instructions:

1. Disconnect ground cable on battery.
2. Install hood switch with supplied bolt, nutplate, and bracket.
3. Connect ground wire from hood switch to ground post that's about 8" away on driver side fender wall.
4. Route other end of wire along the wire harness that follows fender, then over to firewall, and down to the fuse/relay box and secure with enclosed tie wraps.
5. Pull up relay/fuse box by releasing the 4 tabs in the corners. Leave top cover on.
6. Disconnect center plug on the bottom.
7. Carefully pry bottom of plug cap off with small flatblade screwdriver on the sides. BE GENTLE.
8. Carefully pry out rubber wire seal.
9. Carefully pry up the top of the plug with a very small flatblade screwdriver. BE GENTLE.
10. Using a very small flat blade screwdriver or needlenose pliers, break little black plastic blocker in the 3rd hole of the bottom cap from the plug.
11. Feed new hood switch wire through the bottom cap, then rubber seal of the plug in the 3rd hole and then up through the plug. Make sure you have the terminal end of the wire facing the correct position before feeding into the plug. You will here it click into place once inserted. You can tell which way the terminal end faces by comparing it to the other wires already in the plug.
12. Reassemble plug and plug back into the relay/fuse box.
13. Reinstall fuse/relay box back onto the 4 post bracket. Watch other wires as you reinstall the box back onto the 4 post bracket.
14. Reconnect ground on battery and close the hood.

The jeep is still driveable with this wire installed in case youre unable to finish with the WCM and antenna installation at this point in time and need to continue another day. This wire does nothing at this point.

Installing new WCM and antenna.

1. Remove lower vertical cover under steering column by starting from the top and pulling the top ends, working your way down. Its held in by 4 clips I believe. After the 4 clips have been pulled, rotate the cover downward because its hinged at the bottom, and then remove it and set aside.
2. Lower the steering wheel as low as it will go.
3. Remove the steering column covers by removing the 3 torx screws from the bottom. One screw is easy to see, the other two are recessed up inside the cover. My torx driver wasn't long enough to reach up inside for the recessed screw on the right, so I put the torx driver in a vice and pulled the shaft out of the handle about a quarter of an inch and then it was long enough to reach it.
4. Split the covers and remove them. The rear part of the covers are just snapped together, pretty much like the rest of the jeep. LOL. Just pull part.
5. At this point, you can see the WCM by the key cylinder.
6. Carefully, with a very small flat blade screwdriver, remove the little yellow wire harness plug from the wiper arm assembly by depressing the little retaining clip and sliding toward you.
7. As youre facing the steering wheel, remove 1 phillips screw on the right side of the wiper arm assembly and then slide the wiper arm assy toward the center of the jeep and set aside.
8. Now you can see the 1 screw that holds the WCM in place. Remove it and then push away the arms on the WCM to "unclip" it from the column but DONT disconnect the plug. Just let it hang.
9. Install the new WCM and the 1 retaining screw.
10. Install the wiper arm assembly in reverse order from above.
11. Plug in the wire from antenna module into the new WCM and route excess wire under steering column.
12. Hold antenna module in place against steel plate as seen in pic, mark 2 holes, drill and attach module.

In order to start the jeep, you will need to hold the old WCM close to the key, then start the jeep. After it has started, continue holding the WCM close to the key while the jeep is running for about 3 seconds and then let go of it and let it hang. You wont have any problems with it after that. Drive to a dealership and have them cut the new keys first, then unplug the plug from the old WCM and plug it into the new WCM, and then follow the directions for programming the new keys and WCM. After that's done, drive home.

13. Reattach steering column covers in reverse order from above
14. Reinstall lower vertical cover under steering column in reverse order from above.

DONE !!
