Initial Thoughts on Tuffy Cargo Security Deck Enclosure

We (gf and I) installed the Tuffy Security Deck Enclosure last night. A few thoughts on the installation, and first impressions:

1. Install took my gf about 2 hours. I was installing the ARB compressor, and only helped out from time to time when she need an extra set of hands.

2. I have a Quadratec cargo splash mat in back, it required some trimming, and extra pushing/squeezing to get everything aligned.

3. Kit was missing two of the thumb screw bolts to hold the panel behind the seat to the sides. Hardware store run fixed that issue.

Now for thoughts. The packaging was sturdy, we used a forum write-up as primary instructions, with Tuffy's packaged instructions as backup.

Having grown up in a weld/machine shop, I can understand the need to commonize the design for 2/4 doors with/without subwoofer enclosure, but for nearly $400 for purchase price, I do wish it was model specific for my 4 door without sub enclosure. You can see the cutout in the pictures.

When we were done and testing it, my gf reached her arm down in the opening, and pulled out my ratchet and a few other hand tools. Will need to close that hole up, or keep the cooler over there for quick access!

There are also tabs I can trim that are used for 2 door installations. You can see them above the 1/2" ratchet in the first picture.

Overall, if I saw this installed before purchasing, I would first take a shot at fabricating one myself. I'll put it to good use and see how it holds up. Price wise my gut feels like its worth $200, not $350+.

Mine was missing 2 of the thumb screws also. Guess we had the same guy putting our boxes together. I have a 4 door with the subwoofer and am very impressed with it. I'm not a welder by any means though. I can see your point about having a model for Jeeps without the subwoofer. That's a big hole.

Oh, how do you get to the compartment under the mat now? I just have mine sitting inside curving up on the sides, but will have to do some trimming eventually I guess.

Does the Tuffy + Quadratec rear mat effectively block access to the shallow rear lockable trunk? Can't quite tell from the pics if you could still lift up the mat and open it up.

I have the Tuffy rear security deck, but have the subwoofer, so no huge gap. I like it, and it does a decent job of protecting my stuff. Tuffy stuff is made in the USA and it is pricey, but IMO this was worth the $$$$. They should have some sort of bolt-in panel or a weld on addition for the JK with no subwoofer. Have you tried talking to their customer service dept? Usually they are pretty good at addressing issues with their products. Unfortunately, the plastic add a trunks were flimsy, and I like the fact you can take this out pretty easily unlike a security drawer.

I went out and lifted the QT mat and accessed the rear lockable trunk. You can see that lift is limited to about 2 inches in the back. The side vertical panels hold down the mat, which holds down the storage cover.

Options include cutting QT mat, or not using the storage area. Or storing very skinny things...

I haven't contacted them yet, but I will give them a shout to see what they might have for a cover on the sub hole. Thanks for the suggestion!

I've been thinking about getting this and I do have the sub. Can you post a couple of pics of how it opens up and from different angles?

Sliding deck back to open. Rear gate is open obviously.

Rear gate of Jeep has a slight bow, but Tuffy is squared off. I am going to add thicker rubber seal...

Also showed how front attaches, and left side where it attaches to side of Jeep with rubber expansion plug.

Awesome thanks for all the pics, that is exactly what I was looking for. One more question, does asking for any angle pics of your girlfriend also get me a bunch of detailed shots? I mean, she was part of the installation so...

I was missing two of the thumb screws, too.

Other thoughts - I do really like this product. Pricey, though, but solid.

My arrived in perfect shape. (Shipped same day from Dave @ Northridge).

I made scratches similar to what you GF did. Stupid me.

The subwoofer hole is a big security issue. They should address that somehow. I just put my subwoofer back in to close the hole.

One of the corners of my lid rubs on my tailgate a bit. Enough to rub through the paint to the metal. I should have checked that closer when I installed it. I'm going to adjust the deck slightly, touch up the paint, and then put a stick-on pad of some sort there.

My gf's txt response to my request for pics with her and jeep:

"Jeep porn stays on Jeep sites, gf porn stays on gf sites!"

PS - She won't mix her peas and carrots on her plate at dinner either...

I'm going to run a few weeks, then do touch ups, alterations, etc...

I put a towel between rear seat and edges of the slides to keep it from cutting throug hthe backs of the seats. I'm sure there will be other spots to tweak and tune..
