I have a rack that slips over the spare tire. The loop actually goes around the plastic mount for the third light above the tire and rests on the spare. I had it on my TJ for about 8 years and transferred it to the JK.

I just do what you've done in your picture there.

Bike doesn't make it into the Jeep very much. Usually I just ride the bike (:

I have a bike rack mounted to my trailer hitch, has worked fine. The only problem is you cant open the rear up with it on... I would look into the one that holds onto the spare tire, if you are not holding a 35" tire then weight should not be a problem for it.

I've mounted 2 of these:

to a wood platform - holds 2 bikes (57cm frames) inside the Jeep with the seats folded. Will post photo's of it tomorrow.

I have a Hollywood Bike Rack, 73 dollars (cost and shipping) from ebay. Use velcro straps and tie downs from walmart. Holds four bikes solid, no sways or drops.

I got the kargo masters congo cage, yakima load bars and threw on my old Thule V2 racks on top. I also needed something to carry my kayak around so I decided to invest in the big rack setup.

I love it. It makes my jeep like a jungle gym now. I climb all over it now and sometimes sit on top for no good god damn reason.

What tires are you running? They look good. How are they on the highway?

on my 2 door I had a hitch rack, Yakima (sp?) and it was great but I could not open the gate. It is made to fold down so you can open the back but the part where the hinge was rested on the spare tire so no good. For now I am just putting the seat down in the 4 door for our bikes. I will probably go with a spare tire rack this time.

I use a hitch mount Thule rack. It works great. However, I have the 4dr Sahara Unlimited, so, since the spare tire is so big, you will need to get an extension so that the bike rack will extend a bit passed the tire when connected to the receiver. Also, like explained above. you cant open the tail gate when using it.

Thule's SPARE ME, it holds two bikes.

It hooks up to the spare tire. Only problem is that its support frame has a bracket that shoots out through the spare's center cap. Not a problem when the rack (and bikes are on), but when you go to take off the rack, the support frames bracket sticks out the center of the rim, UGLY, too bad they didn't have a cap.
The rack locks onto the tire, however, the bikes do not get locked down. One can just use a cable lock looped through the bikes, good for short stops but for an overnight stop, I would bring the bikes in.

Works fine though.

Mine goes inside. I fold the narrow seat down. Take off the front wheel and lower the seat. One strap between the roll bar, around the handle bars and to the other side of the roll bar. Never moves, no problems and nothing to store when I don't need it. Being on the road keeps things very lean.

I've used the Mopar spare tire-mounted rack for years. It's very sturdy and I would buy another without hesitation. You have to remove the spare to install the first time but once done it's very easy to install and remove the frame that holds the bikes (I don't leave it on when I'm not taking my bike somewhere). You can lock the rack to the spare tire mount and lock the bikes to the rack. And, you can open the tailgate with bikes loaded up.
