Hinges, hinges everywhere, and not-a-one with paint!

Why is it that nearly every single JK I'm looking at (mostly 07s and 08s), have the paint bubbling/peeling off the door hinges?

Seriously, almost every one I've seen. I'm looking to buy a used 4-door, but I don't want one with corroded door hinges after only a few years. What's the deal?

Itís just the opposite for me; all the hinges Iíve seen were just fine.

Well, you live in Nevada, and I live in New York. I'm sure the climate has something to do with it.

Anybody else in the northeast notice this? I mean, I'm talking literally about 19 out of 20 JKs that I've looked at have had this problem. I'm wondering if Jeep would repaint the hinges under warranty perhaps (if the factory warranty hasn't expired)?

This is a common problem with jeeps in some areas. Especially jeeps with cut/modified fenders. Lots of debris gets kicked up while off road and the hinges/door handles are the only thing to get in the way.

I wouldn't be too concerned with it so long as there isn't any additional damage anywhere else on the vehicle. I would just pull them off, strip them, and repaint/bedline.

Gone and I dont miss it at all - 2011 JKU

I don't live in the northeast but I live in the north. And up here I had the same problem. Took a while to find a jk without rust on the hinges, and on the brackets around the windshield. Finally found a garage kept 07 that looked good. So I bought it

yeah I could understand that on a jeep that sees a lot of offroad use, but all the ones that I'm looking at are stock, un-modded jeeps that have probably never even seen the dirt

I guess I'm just rather disappointed. I didn't expect that new jeeps would be having serious paint issues in just a few short years.

My '08 is fine, I live in Boston. It is a very low mile '08...

Even for un-mod Jeep, the front tires kick up dirt, mud, rocks and small pebbles and the front of the hinges collect all of them. They have the effects of chipping the paint off the hinges overtime. You can paint it over but it's not something I worry about.

Yeah, I get that, but my 98 TJ (that has seen a ton of offroad use, and never been waxed the whole time I've owned it) is just now starting to have a bit of rust on the hinges.

Whereas the JKs I'm looking at are having the paint bubbling off the hinges completely, after only a few years.

I don't think the kicked-up debris is the only issue here.

I haven't had any rust on the hinges so I haven't had to disassemble them for paint. Do the the hinges and pins have any paint on the inside, or are they bare metal? I always assumed the corrosion was due to moisture and road salt living in the hinges.

I think it has to do with the dealer painting the doors with the hinges on, thereby leaving one side unpainted, but I'm happy to report that my OE full doors show no such bubbling and my half door hinges were painted separately.

I just noticed some bubbling on my OE full doors yesterday. It wasn't this bad on my '04.

Time to call my body/paint guy...

I just dropped a set of half doors and hinges off to get painted.

While I had them I noticed the hinges are alloy of some kind. The problem with the paint is likely to be from the alloy itself, as impurities will work their way out of it with heat cycling.

Well, that's what I think anyhow.....

Now on a related note...

Chrysler needs to put some paint on these Jeeps! There are several places on our '12 where you can see the primer! Paints job is to protect metal from corrosion, can't do it if it's not there.
