Heavy Duty, lightweight winch bumper installed. (Pics)

What has always made Jeeps fun to me is that they were light weight "scouting" type vehicles. Then we get a hold of them and start adding weight until they break. :shaking:

Having built dozens of Jeeps I was determined to not build the JK into a over burden beast. The more weight you add the more weight you have to haul up and over rocks. The more weight you have to lug around town, stop , start and turn. It breaks parts on the trail, it uses more gas, tires, brakes etc.

Of course there are certain things that a Jeep just kinda needs. Like a winch. I'm not totally convinced they need a bumper. But, I am not quite ready to hack off my front frame rails.

I have been waiting for someone to come out with a light weight winch mount solution, and hoping it would hold my factory fogs too.

So when Aberle Offroad introduced their one piece cast A356-T51 aluminum bumper I was ready to get one. It weighs less than 65lbs. Only about a 20lb difference over my stock set up with tow hooks and metal frame.

Here is their website for more info. Aberle Off Road Jeep Bumper

I took tons of pics.

All the stock stuff removed.

Some quick test fitting with my Bulldog 12k winch.

Here is the back side of the bumper.

Forgive the cheap calipers I was too lazy to go get the good ones out. This is the winch plate.

Top deck.

Bottom deck in front of sway bar bracket.

This is the built in fairlead for the winch rope.

Got it bolted up. Super easy. Fits perfect.

This is Winchline.com winch rope with the dual rope. The red section is for high heat.

Done. That was fast and easy. They make a really cool hoop that matches the lines of the hood and grill but I wanted to stay super light and am not a big fan of hoops.

Now I just need to go wash the Jeep. Hopefully it will be warm enough tomorrow.

Good to see there’s another player in the bumper department. Looks good.
Why would you wash your Jeep with all that snow on the ground?

very sharp. if i had a jk, i dont think i could resist one of these, im using a multi mount winch set up with XJ right now.

Can i ask...if your going for a low weight rig, why did you start with a 4 door? arent they considerably heavier then the 2 door model?

Hey Xtremjeepn:

Do you know if you can buy the shackles by themselves? Also, it looks like they just mount directly to the factory holes behind the bumper. Could these be mounted to the stock bumper? It's what i've been looking for, since i'm broke and can't afford a kick *** bumper...thanks!

I'm not going for a light weight rig, rather trying to not build a heavy weight rig. I need the 4 door for all sorts of other reasons. A 4 door is not an excuse to just blindly add heavy stuff, but even more reason to keep it light since they start heavier.

You can probably buy them separately from the bumper. Your stock bumper will still have the crush cans in front of the bolts on the frame. So you can't just bolt them through the stock bumper. (crush cans are about 4" deep)

to the OP... this bumper has a nice design that went into detail here.... but if you're stuck on price, try the rancho bumper, it's in your price range and so is the warrior bumper
