Has anybody color matched their top themselves?

I'm thinking about buying a hardtop and color matching it to our Deep Water Blue unlimited. Has anyone painted the top themselves? I'm curious as to what is under the black coating. It seems like everyone that has painted a black top dropped it off at a body shop and let them deal with it. I have some painting experience and I want to see what this might take.

how much to drop a top off and paint it white? My black top has one minor scratch and it is white under the black top.

It's just white under the black surface. Mine has lots of scratches - all of them are white (:

If it were me I would find a reasonable body shop to paint the hardtop. They will know how to prep the top for painting so it will adhere correctly plus know how to properly mix the paint with the right additives.

They also have a paint booth and all the equipment and supplies needed for a satisfactory job.

I've painted cars before, and renting a paint booth is a no-brainer. I guess the first step is to find a scratched up hard top for sale and go from there. Quotes from body shops range from $700-1500 is what I have found. Maybe less if I did the prep work

The top is fiberglass. I'd guess you could do the prep work & start it with a rattle can etching & primer.

If you've painted before, I'd think it wouldn't be too hard to do a good job.

I'm thinking to get the color matched w/ clear coat wouldn't be bad (unless it's a pearl color).
