Freedom Top Insulation
Has anyone added any type of sound deadening or thermal insulation to the interior of their Freedom Top? Living in South Texas on the border we regularly see cloudless weeks with temps in the 105 F. The black top just radiates heat after an afternoon of sitting in the sun! I know that insulation will only help so much, but I was also hoping for some sound isolation also. That 'glass top just acts like a drum skin when I have the roof rack mounted, amplifying the wind noise.
I was considering cutting some thin rigid foam board insul and covering it with headliner material then attaching it to the inside with velcro or something similar. However, I thought I would ask here first. Any one with this kind of mod?

I don't have the mod, but a couple of weeks ago I was parked next to another Unlimited Freedom Top. When he returned we started talking and he mentioned that he had painted the top of his top white. I put my hand on the inside of his top and it was noticeably cooler than mine. I also have a YJ hardtop with factory air and in the Southern AZ summer the interior temp. never gets below 80. The interior of the top is very hot. Painting the top would be easy, but as you know it wouldn't improve the sound from the radio. There is a company in Canada that makes insulation for the soft top YJ (no TJ invented yet). I sent them a email years ago asking them to make insulation for the hard top and I would be happy to test it for them in the 110 degree heat here in Tucson. I never heard from them. I think your idea is a good one.

Last summer, my hard top acted like a heater. It was awful. The air coming out of the a/c vents was cold, but I could feel radiant heat from the top. I saw a headliner kit, but it looked like crap and people reported it falling down. I've been thinking about doing something with dynamat and speaker carpet, but I haven't figured out how to make everything stay up and in place permanently without falling down. I ordered a Bestop targa top type of hard top for my 95 YJ and it had a nice insulated headliner. I sent some emails asking if the Bestop for the JK also has the headliner and they said yes. I think if I would have gotten soft top only, the Bestop would be a better choice than the factory hard top. But now, it's hard to justify the cost of an aftermarket hard top when there is nothing wrong with my factory one (mine does not leak a drop). I think taking it to a reputable upholestery shop is worth a try.

3m makes a high heat adhesive made for headliners. It's about $12 a can but well worth it. It's at the auto parts stores
