Flat towing JK behind RV

So my dad just bought an '08 JK Sahara to tow behind their RV. For those of you that flat tow, what's a good tow bar? He's looking at the US gear unified tow brake for brakes, just need a good tow bar. Thanks for any suggestions.

JK Flat Tow

I use a Blue Ox Aventa II towbar. 10000# rated. Easy Hook up. Suggest one that remains attached to the RV.

I use a Roadmaster All-Terrain. It stays on the RV and only the mounting brackets (which are pretty well hidden) stay on the Jeep. Its the best bar that I have had as you can easily disconnect on uneven ground. The best part is that you are not hauling the towbar around on the jeep all the time...

The US Gear Unified Tow Brake is great.

For the tow bar I was using the Mopar tow bar since it was the only one available that worked with the Mopar front bumper.

I am now using a Roadmaster Falcon 2 tow bar with the new Roadmaster brackets that are available for the Mopar front bumper.

But if he is looking to save some money I have a slightly used Mopar tow bar for sale. Here is the posting:

It's only $200 plus shipping. A Roadmaster tow bar and brackets for the JK will set you back upwards of $750.

You can find a tow harness that plugs directly into the factory connectors on my website. This will allow you to flat tow a 2007-2008 Jeep JK and have your brake, running and turn signals operate from the tow vehicle.

I installed your wiring kit when I installed the Roadmaster Brackets. It was an easy install.........and I ran the wiring inside of the frame (a little more work - but a better/cleaner installation). The only thing I had to do was wire in a different plug (4-connector type). Other than that, it was a clean install and I would reccommend it...

You might want to check out this thread, lots of good info on towing the JK.

As a result of much research, I'm going with the following setup.

Blue Ox base plate BX1126
Blue Ox Aladdin tow bar
cool tech wiring harness
SMI Stay and Play Duo Braking System

Got everything on order and plan on installing it myself.

I use a Roadmaster XL 1428-1 baseplate. Roadmaster Falcon II tow bar. Roadmaster "even brake" aux braking system and wiring from CoolTech LLC. The system works perfect and was an easy DIY project.

I use the Roadmaster Sterling All-Terain. I like the Roadmaster brackets much better because they are nearly invisible when not in use and don't hang down low as some others do, sacraficing ground clearance. I also used the CoolTech wiring harness, which I can't say enough good things about. This makes for an easy, professional installation. Cooltech has some great products. I plan on ordering the Ultra CB antenna mount as soon as I get some more bucks together (code for getting the wife's approval). My JK pulls great with my setup. Yeah, I spent a lot on the Roadmaster Sterling and brackets ($800), but it is the best. Your dad will need to decide what works for his budget. Happy towing!

Thanks everyone for all the info and links. I've been passing this info on to him, as he tries to decide what setup is best. So far looks like the Unified Gear brakes, and either a Roadmaster or Blue ox tow bar. Cost isn't as important as getting a good setup. After all what's a couple thousand when you've got that much cash rolling down the road?

Where did you find the Sterling and the Bracket for $800.00?

I use the Roadmaster Falcon II and the hidden brackets on the Jeep. I like the hidden brackets as you really don't see anything unless you look hard in normal driving yet I can get fully hooked up in under five minutes.

I got the Falcon II on the Internet as that was far cheaper than any local shops in our area. I got the Jeep kit and the cables etc all from the local Campingworld. Their install only took a few hours and cost me around $75 on a special deal.

I've had no problems with this setup.

One thing to remember is to put the Jeep into park or re-engage gears before unhooking. It is really embarrassing to chase the Jeep as it comes loose.

I like the hidden brackets that Roadmaster has as well as the All Terain Tow Bar as it slides into the hitch on the Motorhome (2005 38ft Fleetwood Excursion). It makes it nice to not have the Tow Bar on the Jeep, especially if you do any off road driving....... The Cooltec harness was great as is their CB Antenna mounting system. Just trying to figure out a way to nicely mount my CB radio.....
