story and tech?
Traversing near the border on a regular basis in jeeps leads to all sorts of fun...One time I had such a bad oil leak it was smoking like crazy and the border patrol pulled me over. they explained that smugglers driving through the desert FREQUENTLY catch on fire and they thought I had a tumbleweed under there or something. That was in a cherokee, what I want to know is: what skid plate goes in front of the stock tranny skid that would prevent debris buidl up...I'm thinking skid row(?) oil pan/engine plate...

I wonder how some expanded metal grate tacked to the sides of the skid plates would work?

If you happen to get it totaled and you can wait, I would recommend the 2012, especially if they're going to include the new engine (though there may be a price bump because of it). Good luck either way.

Thanks, but can't wait until next year. Too long for a rental car :-)
I'm fine with Jeep "power". Yea, a little piggish, but it's a Jeep. The new engine doesn't really matter to me. I'm a cruiser...takin' my time from A to B

Sorry to hear of your loss. I was going to mention the recalled master cylinder tubes as well (I took mine in a month ago for it), but since you found leaves, its a typical occurance with any vehicle that you take offroad in wooded areas. In fact I'm a stickler about it, everytime I finish a trip I inspect the undercarrage for debris.
I've actually seen a Lincoln Continental catch fire after they drove it through a friends leaf covered front yard. The converter cover picked up a bunch of leaves and they ignited while going to the store. Luckily a passerby had a fire extinguisher.

loss
I lost my jeep on Saturday driving from New orleans to gatlinburg. Left about 530 in the morning got on interstate and got to tuscallusa (sp) AL about 2.5 hours away got off interstate went through a light cycle and then was first in line for the next light. Smoke rolled out and jeep died. I jumped out and my wife jumped out grabed our 2 yr old son in the carseat they ran to the median and i took my jacket and tried to beat the fire out while she called 911 fire was coming from under the jeep but wife said it was in the engine compartment too. so i gave up when the fire crew got there in 3 minutes.
looks like a total loss will find out more. i did not know about any recalls

Your first post on the forum tells us how your jeep caught on fire! That really sucks, sorry to hear about it. Good luck with your claim and all.

So sorry Lowinhz! That sucks...
An update for my Jeep fire; Insurance paid ALL of it except $185. I was thrilled and surprised. I did not have GAP insurance. So I really lucked out, was expecting a gap of a few grand!
I got the 2011 Rubicon (pics in another thread, search my name) and I frikkin love it. I still have the pics of my other Jeep up on one of the computers still because it was my first Jeep ever, and although the Rubi is WAY more awesome, it was still my first
Anyway...back to YOU Lowinhz...post here to tell us how it started when you get the report, because I am a bit pissed at Jeep right now. I took my Rubi through a trail, was very benign. Just a mud puddle or two, maybe 6" deep.
As a goof, and because of my past experience, I decided to look under the Jeep. Sure enough leaves were caught int eh same damn place where the last Jeep burned up from!!! Im sorry...yadda yadda yadda I know some of you will say " well you should always check" but damn man, this wasnt even an "off road" trail, just this short path thing that connects two roads you could take a car through!!!
So I got a big stick and dug a clump of leaves trapped! To me, this is a design flaw. Sorry, argue with me all you want...to me this shouldnt be happening AT ALL on a vehicle supposedly built (especially a Rubi!!) for off roading. If I hadnt checked...possibly Jeep #2.
Any other ORV I have seen has skid plates in this area, the Jeep doesnt.
So Im curious how YOUR Jeep went up...because if it is the same reason, I have lawyers in the family that will work for free to go after something like this.

Heck you're not even suppose to park over dry grass per the owner's manual. How's that for an off-road vehicle!!

I feel bad for you guys, Jeez.....That REALLY sucks!
I haven't read a fire thread in a couple years, either.....
Were they both automatics? That was an issue before, with ATF leaking onto the exhaust lines.
FWIW: 2dr 6-speeds don't self-combust.
