You can do a search for this and should find a lot of info. I am pretty certain that this happens when your steering wheel is not properly centered. The ESP uses the position of the steering wheel in relation to the sensors reported vehicle trajectory to make adjustments. If the sensors tell the software that the vehicle is traveling in a straight line with proper traction, but the steering wheel does not indicate centered, it will error out.

I believe there are other failures that cause this, but this is the most common.

After sitting for a while, did the light reappear after re-starting?

Center your wheel and get an allignment. Also make sure your rear track bar is properly adjusted so that the rear axle is centered. The easy way to tell is compare the distance your driver's side rear tire sticks out from the fender with the distance you passenger side rear tire sticks out from the fender.
