Engine Ceased

I just bought a 2008 4 door JK and took it mudding. I got stuck and had to get it towed back to my house. After further investigation, well my engine light on along with the ETC warning light, it wouldn't crank. Took the spark plugs out, sucked the water out of where the spark plugs were and drained the oil. Well when I drained the oil it was 1/4 water and 3/4 oil. Tried to manually crank the pulleys (I'm not mechanically inclined) and it didn't move. Just wondering if I am screwed, what the problem might be or if my warranty will cover it (wishful thinking). Thanks for any and all of your feedback!!!

Sean

That sucks.

Warranty isn't going to cover water damage to the engine. If your oil drain was 1/4 water, it sounds like you're *****ed.

Sounds like a warning to the rest of us - be careful out there.

Did you try cranking with the starter when the plugs were out? That's what I would do before deciding the engine wont turn over at all.

Well, when you get it fixed, I advise you invest in a River Raider snorkel before you venture out into that deep mud again! I have one and LOVE it!

-Not "using" the snorkel here, but still a good picture of it.

I'm afraid I have no helpful advice beyond that. But seriously, I bought my snorkel not so I COULD go windshield deep(even though I have...), but just as an "insurance policy" for when I go mudding and a mud/water hole is deeper than I expected. Even big splashes in shallower stuff have been known to cause problems. So the snorkel helps minimize the potential damage. Though I do have video of some deep stuff if anyone wants(PM me so as not to hijack this thread).

BUT, if your engine is destroyed and unrepairable. Might be a good excuse for a Hemi engine swap! I'd hate to have an excuse, but love to at the same time. Or maybe a diesel swap?

I would pull the cylinder heads, check for damage. See of anything is bent or broken. You say you have the plugs pulled and it won't turn over it all?

Might be time to contact your insurance company and hope they'll cover it. Unless you have a real generous dealer I doubt they'll help you. If the engine is seized you may want to either look into a Hemi swap or contact one of the places that does them (AEV & Burnsville Offroad). I've read that they have the stock engines laying around at very reasonable prices.

Good luck...

If you tried to start the engine while there was still water in the cylinders you probably bent a rod or such. Insurance is your best bet.

you mean your engine has seized up and has ceased to work. that sucks, i would definitley go the insurance route. obviously deep water so don't for get to empty your air line and box or it will continue to drip water into the mixing chamber.

sounds like you hydo locked the motor. Trying to crank it might have trashed the motor. Remove all the spark plugs, the try to crank it to see if water comes out.

You first time off roaders need to learn what you cna and can't do prior to trying things. This could be a very expensive lesson. You insurance should cover it though.

Sorry for the stupid or noob question, but how is insurance going to cover this? Is there special offroad coverage a person needs to buy to cover something like this?

Insurance should NOT cover it, nor should it even be expected or asked to. Y'all wanna' tear the hell outta' your Jeeps, that's YOUR decision. But, don't expect to defray the cost by passing on the costs to everyone else.

As Dr. Phil would say: " Take ownership of the situation!"

Oh, come ON!! Insurance is utterly and totally about passing costs on to everyone else! That's the whole point of insurance!

That said - I doubt insurance will cover this - it's a mechanical failure issue, rather than an "incident" of some kind that is typically covered by insurance.

He pays his premiums he can "use" his insurance. I'm guessing that if his ins would cover it he'll also see an increase in his rates. And I agree with TxDog, that's what the whole industry is based on, why do you think rates are higher in different areas?

I've heard of insurance companies picking stuff like this up. I would classify it as an "accident". No different than if you ran off a highway into a pond and locked up the engine. It's all part of the "accident". Just gotta make sure you explain how it happened as an "accident" and not trying to drive across Lake Michigan. Atleast that's the angle I would take with 'em.
