I never capped mine but it'd be fairly easy. You could even just get some Great Stuff foam and fill the ends and then shave it and paint it.

SharBite, Did you happen to do a write up on your work...it's excellent! What winch/mounting plate did you go with?

I did not do a write up- I wish now I had taken some pics during the process. I used a universal plate from Harbor Freight and trimmed it to fit. It was only $30- much cheaper than the made to fit plates.

I really had to go the wife and 2 kids budget route- the winch is a Ramsey that my dad had in his closet still in the box for 10 years. He bought it for one of his trucks and never got around to using it so he gave it to me when he remembered he had it. I had about $50 in materials and the mounting plate, so I was really happy with how it turned out vs. cost. I have already asked pop to dig through that closet some more, I sure would like some rock rails or ProComp wheels- but no such luck!

I know the wife/kids budget route very well myself...just got the Rubi and now am trying to convince her I need rims/tires/lift...the list goes on.

Also, any idea what the dimensions are on the winch?

The winch is roughly 21" long by 6" tall and 6" deep. I don't plan on taking it off any time soon, mainly because getting those spacers lined up to bolt on the fairleads was a pain! It really wasn't that tough overall- you just have to get that bumper off and start putting things in place to see what cutting and trimming you have to do. Once you have the mounting plate cut and mounted, you have very little cutting to do on the metal part of the bumper. A few minor clearance trims depending on what winch you use and you can bolt it right in. Obviously you have to cut a hole in the front of the bumper to run your line through, but that is pretty easy as well. Here is a pic from underneath. If you give it a try and have questions once you get going just PM me and I'll give you as much detail as I can.

Why not just ditch the plastic piece altogether?

Thanks for all the replies. These look real nice, but I guess no one has came up with end caps for the front bumper that you can purchase and install to give a factory look finnish.
You would think that someone would invent this for the JK like they did with the TJ, remove the end caps and replace with a flat piece that you can purchase and gives a factory finnish. Thanks Bill |

I dug this thread back up after searching for an hour.
Does anyone have a write-up on shortening the factory front bumper? Or, does anyone make a bumper end kit? |
