The definitive 2012 Wrangler 3.6 Pentastar Thread

Introduced in 2010 for the 2011 model year, the 3.6 Liter Pentastar motor (originally called the "Phoenix" but changed prior to release due to trademark issues I believe) is the next motor to be introduced to the Jeep Wrangler lineup. All indicators point to a fall 2011 release for the 2012 model year. It will increase horsepower by 40-50 percent, depending on how they tune it for this application. The current horsepower and torque ratings on the models with this powerplant are:

283hp in 200, Avenger, Grand Caravan, Journey, Town & Country
290 in Grand Cherokee and Durango
292 in Charger and 300
305 in Challenger

The torque variance is not as great, with the span being only from 260 lb ft to 268 in the different models

The current 3.8 has 202 horsepower and 237 lb feet of torque.

Weight is 383 pounds, which is 42 pounds lighter than the 3.5, 94 pounds lighter than the 3.7, and 30 pounds lighter than the current 3.8 in the Wrangler.

Specs:

All-new Chrysler 3.6-liter, DOHC, 24-valve Pentastar V-6 Technical Specifications
Displacement: 3.6 liters
Bore x stroke: 96 x 83 mm
Valve train system: Double-overhead cam with roller finger followers and hydraulic lash adjusters. Dual independent cam-torque actuated phasers
Fuel injection: Multi-point port fuel injection
Construction: High-pressure die-cast aluminum cylinder block and semi-permanent mold aluminum cylinder head
Maximum engine speed: 7200 rpm
Fuel requirement: E85 (Ethanol) or unleaded regular, 87 octane (R+M)/2
Emission capability: PZEV

There are talks of the Pentastar being turbocharged by 2014.

I'll update this initial post when I get hard facts as they arrive and I'll post updates as new posts to keep y'all aware of the changes. If anyone hears anything before I do, post away and I'll add it into the initial post as well.

I'm going to be a first time owner very soon... Now the question is do I hang on to my 07 Grand Cherokee lease for a couple extra months while I wait for the 2012 jeeps or do I stick with the older models and the tried and true engines!?

They have warranty for a reason! I think the near-unanimous opinion will be to wait for the 3.6

I wasn't impressed at all when I drove the '11 Grand Cherokee with the Pentastar. I opt'd for the HEMI.

My very reliable source says that they will be ready to order in July by dealerships here in Canada, so I assume we should see them sometime around September

They will probably opt for the 283hp version since it's already in a van.

It'll still be big improvement, though, especially since the mpg is supposed to be better than what we have now.
