It's kind of ironic, I got an email this morning saying "We noticed you have not joined us on JF in a while. If you get a moment drop in and let us know what you've been up to." I will be the first to admit I have never been a big poster on any forum, but I have always tried to stay in the background using the different forums as "Google for Jeeps." That being said, last night I was thinking I need to post something about what I am up to, because I think more people would like to hear about the process that I have unertaken and the great things that come from it. So, here we go......

I have decided to install a Chevy 6.2L into my 2008 JK. My original 3.8L had 22,500 miles, mostly just a weekend vehicle, but I felt it never really was up to the task. Ever since the day I ordered the Jeep, I knew the 3.8L would eventually come out and something larger would go in. Not too long ago I met up with Motech and decided to go with their install kit. More about Motech in a minute. I am using a new crate 2009 Chevy 6.2L L92(L9H) engine. The engine is an all aluminum block rated at 403hp, 417ft-lbt in this configuration. The transmission is a new 6 speed automatic Chevy 6L80E transmission. For those of you not familiar with the Chevy transmissions, the 6L80E is the same one that comes in certain 1500 trucks, the Denali, Escalade, Camaro, and others. It has tap shift built in, which allows for driver controlled manual up and down shifts. In a short summary, its really nice and smooth. My Jeep is a Rubicon which came with the NV241OR transfer case. Because of the input shaft required to mate the 6L80E to the transfer case, we cannot use the 241OR. Therefore, I had to change from the 241OR transfer case to the 241J(read non-rubicon) transfer case.

Now for Motech....I cannot say enough. These guys have been a pure joy to work with. Their products, knowledge, and support have been excellent in every way and I would recommend them to anyone. They really have this thing figured out. I don't want to get into trouble pushing a vendor, so I will stop here and let the pictures do the talking. I know they have posted on JF before and they may even be a supporting vendor. Give them a call if you are interested and let them tell you what they can do. You will not be disappointed!

Here was the first step. I am certain that most do not have the ability to lift the body, but if you do you will not regret it. The ability to lean over and reach everything is very nice. Please don't rib me too much about the sticker on the side of the Jeep. My wife and I put it on their before everything got such a weird connotation. We thought it was cool to represent the JK name. It will soon be replaced with a really nice 6.2L emblem!

Here is the monster! The really great thing about the 6.2L is its ability to be docile and driveable. It acts nice until you roll into it. This is not a daily driver, but it can be. I am not scared to have my wife and daughter take it and be worried about their safety. And who wouldn't like to have 400+hp and still be able to get 18+mpg?

And here are the most current pictures I have. The exhaust is almost complete. It is a mandrel bent 304 Stainless Steel exhaust; 2 1/2" manifold back merging into a 3". I used Random Technology stainless converters. I am running a Magnaflow straight through muffler just behind the transfer case, as a resonator, and a large body Magnaflow in the stock location as the big noise killer. I'm going for the ultimate sleeper effect!

Great choice of engine/transmission - you don't see too many people dropping the chevy blocks into the JKs, and you hit the nail on the head - it's a very well-mannered setup when driven conservatively, and it will scream when you get into the skinny pedal.

How much went into the little things with this swap (ignition, steering, etc.)? And about how much would you say this set you back? I want to guess that at about a $9-10K crate motor, turn key, if my memory serves me right? Also - why did you settle on the 241J vs. an Atlas?

Believe it or not, the engine and trans were about $6200 to my door. They may have gone up a little since. The engine came dressed with plugs, coils, water pump, etc. Additionally, we are reusing all of the original JK components (AC, power steering, alternator).

I went with the 241J out of convenience. This Jeep is not a heavy wheeler. Short of changing the input, the 241J bolted right in, the plugs all mate up, and the cables all hook up. Combine the 241J with the 4.027 first gear of the 6L80E and it will compression brake the JK to a stop! I think it will do very well.

Wow - that's a great price on that motor! Glad to hear how much of the JKs equipment could be reused, and if you're not beating on it, the ease of the 241J swap sounds well worth it, especially given the cost difference.

I'm probably going to land somewhere around $15k, no labor. When I am complete I will total it up for giggles. Please understand that I am going full out, all the bells and whistles (6.2vvt, 6L80E, tap shift, cruise control, radiator, John Wood driveshafts, full 304 stainless exhaust, etc.). I know that you can install an LS in a JK for much less, but I have chosen to do everything brand new at a perfect OEM or better level. All things considered, I think $15k for a 6.2vvt 400+hp engine swap isn't too bad. I am certain that if one would source a lift out engine there would be a huge savings. For instance, you could go with a 5.3L lift out and save $2500 or so on the engine. If you went with a 5.3L you would not have to redo the complete exhaust, change the radiator, or change the driveshafts. If you are trying to be cost concious, the 5.3 is the way to go. You will get a 300+hp V8 that is capable of getting 20mpg and be as docile as they come.

Robbie and the guys over at Motech really know there stuff. Im kinda jealous of your setup I put the 5.3 in mine and love it but who wouldn't want the extra power that the 6.2 puts out. Anyways your build is looking good

Where did you get the engine and trans from? You said a new 2009 crate setup. Is that from GM or the local dealer or where?

I'm not quite sure about the rules in talking about vendors. If someone would please advise me it would be greatly appreciated. I would tell you to google ls wrangler. They are definately great guys.
