charcoal cannister

Am I the only person to have torn off the charcoal cannister located on the underside of the floorpan in a 4 door JK? Not a very good place to put it. I lost it driving through light brush. Ended up making my own skid plate when I could not locate one after market. $250 or so to replace the cannister. Bad design.

Wow. Sorry to hear that. I have not heard of anyone doing this so far. You must have hit something "just right".

I was under may Jeep the other day and saw that box and I said to myself, 'that looks kind of unprotected in that spot'. Sorry to hear you had to find out the hard way. This might be a dumb question but could you still drive it after you ripped it off or does fuel start leaking out?

only fuel vapors are pulled into the canister. If you tore it off you could continue to drive....But I would bet the check engine light would come on.

fuel cap message/check engine light

The fuel cap message comes on, and after a few cycles, the check engine light comes on as well. There is a pretty strong gas smell coming from one of the dangling hoses, but other than that, its as driveable as ever. I found the old cannister, but one of the hose attachments was broken, and I replaced the whole unit.

I just paid $180, but the part is only $45. I may NOT spend over $100 on a skid plate to protect a $45 vapor canister.

Hardrock or rockhard 4x4 has them for $99. I think the hassle of not having to deal with it is worth it.

They also make relocation kits now. I don't know teh details on this, but its been talked about in this forum.

I spoke with the sevice folks at the local dealer re: relocation. They said that any emissions systems that may remotely be related to the evap canister probably would not get coverered under warranty. Just the simple mod of cutting hoses makes them uneasy and not too anxious to not blame the mod.

There have been numerous people trashing the canister. i relocated mine when i put my 1" bl on. i move the mount from the bottom of the frame to the top of the frame and it moved it up about 2". Mine is out of the way now. I did not have to cut anything.

I just got some new bolts and raised it from the bottom of the frame rail to the top of the frame rail. Nothing special. it just moves it up out of the way.
