Bought more stuff... Sheesh I can't stop! Just bought AEV rear bed liner and touch up paint. I figure I should have the paint on hand especially if any additional mods require drilling. Oh, I also ordered custom BUG-OUT! hood decals.

It's more just for fun really. I'm not a "prepper nut" that truly thinks armageddon (read, Hordes of Armed Government Zombies) is coming. But here in MN the need to be in survival mode is just a snowstorm away. I will be using it for hunting and off-roading whenever I can get away from my desk.

I'm still researching and shopping for a front bumper. I want a full width steel bumper that does not cost a fortune and has options for a winch and grille guard. I'm also on a budget. Previously I've looked at Smitty XRC MOD and then the Warn Elite. Smitty has failed on multiple occasions so far to return and respond to questions about their products. That's their loss. Warn responded and has been wonderful and detailed in their answers. That's a win for them, but the weight of the bumper is pretty extreme before adding a winch and guard. Today while searching everywhere on these forums and the web I found that Olympic has a new front bumper as of this June. http://www.quadratec.com/products/12001_040X_PG.htm This bumper comes in at under 50 lbs and is only 12 lbs more than the stock bumper. That sounds impressive. So the research begins. I've been searching for manufacturing specs and I haven't found any yet. Does anyone know anything about this bumper? I'll be trying to contact Olympic to see what they say.

I finally got a response from Olympic. I asked them the type and thickness of their new Phoenix bumpers.

Eric from Olympic did respond at 11:35pm, less than 30 minutes after I emailed him, so I'm guessing he's the best person to contact over there.
The Phoenix bumper is made from high strength .120 wall steel it is a 1/8" thick. Its engineered to offer low weight yet offer full width protection. The multiply angle design provides it with a lot of strong.
This explains the light weight factor of the bumper. Seems this bumper would be more than strong enough for my needs. Hard core rock crawlers may like a thicker steel. I do not know what wall steel is so I will look that up. But so far based on my needs and budget this could be what I buy. Next year... I'm still replenishing my toy budget.

1/8th-inch on a front bumper is a bit on the thin side (3/16 is the norm) but like they said, lots of angles does help in the strength department and along with some internal gusseting it should be just fine.

I like the fact that it has the cutouts for the factory fogs, thatís a plus in my book.

It comes down to need vs want vs $$$. I won't be one of those rock crawlers so the super strong bumpers may not be what I need. But I would like something better than stock that has decent strength. Who knows, maybe I'll get this out somewhere and find out it dents or crumples super easy. This bumper appears to be untested by the masses because it's so new.

I made a 1/8inch thick front bumper for my zj. Its solid. The only thing i wouldnt do is mount a winch to the thinner metal..as long as the winch mount is renforced or tied into the frame mounts

Well I have a warn elite front bumper sitting my garage. I'm waiting to decide which winch to buy and spring before installing. My garage isn't heated so all work stops til spring.

It's going to be a loooong winter. It's not even December yet and I'm already removing parts from my Jeep's interior to paint. I had already bought a can of Commando Green touchup spray paint. Today I test painted an old plastic cigar cutter. It turned out great. So, out came my vents and now the vent rings are Commando Green. Meanwhile I saw more things I could paint. The vents look great!

Subscribing! I like your attitude towards Jeeps and Commando! I've been thinking some of these things might look good painted that way. I'm actually thinking of getting some steel wheels in the spring and painting them to match like the old military Jeeps

Where did you get your touch up paint? How close was the match?

I bought it from Quadratec - It's Mopar paint so the match is dead on.

Thanks! I had a quick thought of painting the wheels too, but decided not to.

I'll be looking around the interior to see what else I can paint. I can only do cheap or free upgrades for now. The wallet is closed and so is my garage until it warms up again. I won't wrench in the freezing cold.
