Bike rack for 35" tire on tire carrier/bumper

I've tried searching for the information first but really haven't found a good answer yet. I would like to get a bike carrier for my outfitted Rubicon but am finding its pretty difficult. I had a JK Sahara with a Thule spare tire carrier that worked great, but when I bought my Rubicon that already had 35's on it, my Thule is finding a better home.

So I have a Hard Rock rear bumper with the tire carrier and need something to put a couple of heavier beach cruisers on. I also have some mountain bikes so it needs to be somewhat flexible in that I never really need to carry more than 2 bikes, but the clamps need to fit both sets of bikes. Here in SoCal, you can go to the desert and be at the beach in under 2 hours!! gotta switch equipment when doing so.

I hope to find another spare tire carrier, but if its not possible, maybe I need to go to a swing away model Thule or Yakima. The back of my tire from the receiver hitch has got to be about a 10" or so offset so I'm not sure what setup will work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance.

I live on the east cost i and bike when ever i get a chance. i would not go putting mountain bikes on the racks that mount to the spare. try looking around for one that goes into hitch receiver. just you might have a problem with the rack hitting the spare but that is an easy fixes. just go out and buy a hitch extender and put it on and u will be ready to rock and roll

Hey There - Some rack makers offer hitch racks with different horizontal receiver piece lengths. I have a Swagman

http://www.swagman.net/product_singlearmxp5.html

rack that has two positions so you can easily clear a spare. I have a 32" and mine clears in the "retracted" position.

I've got a Yakima Holdup (pretty much the same thing as a Thule T2 916). The Yakima won't fit with the spare and the Thule is questionable. I'm getting a 6-7" hitch extender. I want the platform rack because it's just so much easier and because my MTBs don't have straight top tubes to fit into the hang 'em type racks.

I bought a hitch (two bike) rack at Harbor Freight for $30 and then welded a 12" extention ($13) to it so that it will stick out far enough to clear the 35" spare, total OTD price was $50.

I just got a King Joe Yakima for the bumper and use it in the front of my jeep because of the trailer I pull. I fasten it to the hoop on the hood and lash the bottom under the front bumper. It works great. I could post a pix if you like.

I bought a Softride. It's a standup bike rack with an extended receiver post. I have 13.5" width tires and it will still fold up when not in use.

I got a standard car bike rack, set it on top of my oversized spare tire and just tied the 6 straps onto my spare tire carrier. Quick, cheap, easy, simple. Drove over 500 miles through high speed and gravel roads and my bike didn't budge! Before you go buying expensive bike racks, take a look at your spare tire carrier and see if you can find 6 attachment points. If so, you problem is solved.

I have a thule hitch rack and it clears tires fine.

If you need it you can just get a hitch extension that is a few inches long

I have an OR Fab tire carrier with jerry cans, so I couldn't find a hitch rack that was long enough to clear (and I didn't like the idea of it sticking out that much). There is also no rear tire carrier that mounts on the rear tire that fits anything over a 32" tire. I found that the Saris Bones rack was flexible enough to mount on my rear tire. I still use an additional ratchet strap through the rack and in an x around my tire for additional security (not pictured here), but my setup works really well and the bikes are high enough to not really worry about backing them into someone while parallel parking.

I added a 1 1/4" hitch to the back of my swing away tire carrier. Then used a performance xport bike rack that allows me to add 2 bikes. and still open the tail gate.

you can get a extention for your existing reciever and make your old rack work. I actually got a dual receiver extension in one so I can pull my trailer and my bike rack at the same time.

Just installed Yakima Spare Time on 32X11.5X15 BFG TAKO and it looked like there was about 1" clearance before tightening knob, but if you say it won't work on 12.5, then I have to believe you, will take pics if anybody wants, I love it!
