Sorry man... I thought we had a vendor account here. I am not the regular guy from our company who posts here. I'll look into it.

Not exactly sure but the Prosteers go for $600 plus $125 every time you need to rebuild them. I think these will offer similar performance @ a fraction of the price.

yep, i follow your updates pretty regularly over on jkowners, and those on this forum that aren't over there wouldn't suffer for your passion and expertise, so i'd hate to see PP disappear from here over something little overlooked

Ball Joint

Hi I have a 2008 wrangler with 23,000 miles. Have had to replace tires last week(they were worn bad). went for inspection sticker and now told my ball joints need replacing. Dealer says 3 year warranty up two months ago. Have had all maint done at dealer. Has anyone else had premature failure of their ball joints?:

Synergy (reasonable) and Dynatrac (very expensive but for good reason) are the considered the best although there are a couple of other players to throw into the mix.

Reading back on this thread i see some clarification; checking ball joints, lift the tire up a few inches, place a pry bar under it. Pop it up and let it down, is should hardly move UP at all at the lower ball joint. If it makes a popping sound it is far gone.

You do not just grab the tire and shake it. That is for a Unite bearing.

Here's the full story:

Radial (side-to-side) movement in the upper ball joint should not exceed 0.060" (1.5mm).

Axial (up and down) movement in the lower ball joint should not exceed 0.050" (1.25mm).

A dial indicator is the best instrument to measure ball joint play.

Jack the front tire off the ground.
Place a jack stand under the axle next to the jack.
Lower to put some weight on the jack stand.
Place a long pry bar under the tire, from the side.
Have someone pry the tire up and down while you watch the lower ball joint for up and down play.
Axial (up and down) movement in the lower ball joint should not exceed 0.050"

Have someone grab the tire at top and bottom to wiggle the top in and out while you watch the upper joint for side play.
Radial (side-to-side) movement in the upper ball joint should not exceed 0.060"

Even if the upper joint checks good, change both if the lower checks bad.

mine was so bad there was need for technical measurement. i mean it was like 3/16 of an inch. made popping sound that was distinctive. i would bet they would have been out of spec at 15k. BUT the jeep see's a a lot of trail time, long distance trails and local DD.

once the lowers were removed they rattled like skeleton in a trash can. they were toast and it is product of more back space 3.75 wide tires and a lot of rocks. I did not go to the dealer and plead my case for a warranty fix. I replaced them. Bought the right tool that cost more than the synergy joints.
