Ball Joint Warning!!!

I just got back from getting my 6,000 mile service (tire rotation, oil change), and the service department told me that my front ball joints had already gone bad. This is completely covered under the factory warranty. I asked the service rep if it looked like something I had done while wheeling or if it was a factory deffect and he told me that they are starting to see a lot of these on JK's, so it's more than likely a factory defect.

Some ole crappy non-serviceable ball joints they use on every thing now. What we need are ball joints with grease zerks!

How would you know if you had a bad ball joint?

Jack up the Jeep by the axle so the suspension is carring the weight of the Jeep and then shake the tire. I mean really shake it to there should be no slop in the tire. I usually jam a scrap 2x4 under the tire and try prying it a little bit to see if I get movement.

I am really surprised about the ball joints on these. My truck eats ball joints like a elephant eats peanuts. Usually solid front axles the ball joints last much better.

Hi,

by upgrading my Rubicon to the “Alloy USA” - Chromoly front axle shaft kit - #12155 - we found that the front right ball joint is gone.

I changed it to a greasable version - my mechanic told me that this greasable version is the OEM version on the last TJ Jeep - why not on the newer JK
