If I didn't do the mods, the Jeep wouldn't have the finesse and capability on the trail. The mods are necessities, not luxuries. I usually invite the "haters" to follow me in their Tacoma's, Chevy's, Ford's etc. No one's taken me up yet.

Sure you would lucky to get 28k but then again vehicles lose typically 30% of their value as soon as they leave the lot. So their 25k Hyundai will only by worth 17.5k as soon as it leaves the lot.
To the point, if they are digging at you like that to give you crap about what you do then they are just jealous of how cool your Jeep is and how crappy their lives are. Unless you spent it on chrome and lowering kits.

Everyone has a budget for personal enjoyment, it's just where you spend it.
Sinking that money into a jeep instead of blowing it on a vacation, makes more logical sense.... atleast you can enjoy it everyday and go wheeling.
Seems to me your Co-workers are judging you on being more A-Typical than being incompetent with your money.

I'll add that it is very rare for somebody to pay a compliment to someone else nowadays - more common for someone to shoot someone else down. Whether because of jealousy or pure ignorance - I don't pay any heed to that kind of crap. Of course, I don't go pissing on anybody else's parade, either...
Jrama is right about the personal pleasures. Everybody has something they spend money on - to you it may be your passion, and others may appreciate it or think that it is a waste.
On another note, I just bought a $2700 rifle.

Yeah man I can wholly appreciate a $2700 rifle. Not because I know about guns (NOT A CLUE). But I am by far not a rich man, and my heep is the result of over 4 years of 70 hour weeks of blood sweat and tears. I firmly believe in putting your nose to the grindstone and working towards your goals. It doesn't have to make sense to anyone else. Though I would be thoroughly heartbroken if it was stolen or totalled, both by the financial loss and the feeling of loss of a family member LOL

It's not about the resale value.... I will NEVER sell my jeep!!! Already talking to my 6 year old son about how he will need to be careful with the skinny pedal when he gets it. I am at over 100K and don't regret a single penny!!

Similar for me Brent - my 11 year old son won't let me part with mine between now and when he gets his licence...it's kinda scary but I do like that he has the Jeep bug too!
Also, I think mods are in the eye of the beholder: if it works for you and you enjoy it, then it was worth it.
This was my big mod year and I know I'm gonna get flack, especially for my snorkel. Then again, I do take it offroad into wet areas, and my trip to Minden last year scared the crap outta me - check out my water crossings... http://www.youtube.com/user/07jksahara#p/u...so I think it's well worth it!

Now see thats what Im talking about, 100k in to a vehicle whose msrp tops out at what 36 for a loaded JKU? Somebody on here has a sig line mentioning that once it becomes a labor of love then time and money become irrelevant. I firmly believe that, and might even put it on my office wall one day.
X2 about the snorkel. Sure it gets the eye roll and snickers but if you wanna play in the wet stuff what is to hate about a few hundred bucks preventing complete engine destruction??? I'm still holding out for Rugged Ridge's spiffy new snorkel to hit the market, already got money set aside for that bad boy

Not sure how american made a Jeep is when i crawl under it with a metric wrench and see made in China over a bunch of things. But a jeep is what you make it. It is a vehicle that you can completely customize for yourself. Make it your own regardless of what others think also... why would you even think of selling it lol, pay it off if you already havent and turn it into something even better if you still have ideas. Its yours not theirs so enjoy it.

If you are modifying your Jeep for resale value, they are right, your an idiot. But obviously they are the idiots because they don't understand why you do what you do. Would they laugh at a mechanic for buying Snap-On tools ? They cost way more than the tools from Lowes or Home Depot.
Your Jeep is the tool you use for enjoyment and to get you where you want to go, no matter how hard the terrain is. In this since, "it's a Jeep thing", they obviously don't understand.
BTW, I so far, have a $60k Jeep, and I aint done yet.

Nothing wrong with mods at all.
Especially if it's your hobby.
I have other hobbies that get in the way do I can't focus too much on my vehicles. I would love to when I win the lottery

Bought the jeep for $700, I actually jewed the guy down from $750. I've spent at least 7k on it, at least the last time I added it up. I have over 1k just in raw steel. Doesn't faze me the least bit.
I recently bought a trashed 1965 correct craft for $1224.99 (eBay ) Drove to florida to get it, cost me $900 dollars in gas alone. I've spent about 1K so far between different parts to restore it, and I havent even started fixing it yet. Absolutely worth it.
Some guys drink, some guys smoke, I build.

I wish. Couldnt afford the gas just to get TO Moab and back LOL. Here in Virginia its mostly Nation Forest trails. There are two offroad parks on the other side of the state. Though we do have a little beach access left here on the coast!
