7 vs 9 inch fairlead

Aberle had an issue with their 9 inch fairleads so when they shipped mine they sent me a 7. They have been cool and told me they would switch it in the future if I preferred. My question is, is it purely a cosmetic difference or is there any reason to want one size over the other?

My gut tells me that it has to do with the spool size on your winch. narrow fairlead and wide spool means getting your line to reel evenly might be difficult. Maybe I'm wrong...

Makes sense to me as the cable would then be at more of an angle.
