Is there anything you like about your Jeep? You don't sound too happy with it. I mean, I understand being mad about the rust and all (and freaking $90 for an oil change is unheard of), but fill me in on what you like about the JK... My next Jeep will be a JK so I was just curious to get an idea of what you think of it.

And 6k miles in a month??? Crazyness! What do you do that you drive that much? I have an '03 with 31k miles and you may get more on yours by the summer

Don't worry, it is just surface rust on your undercarriage. If desired, you can give everything a coat of POR-15.

Well, more than just undercarriage. Some big parts in the engine, and in where the wheels and brakes are too. It's everywhere. If I didn't know it was a brand new car, I would swear it was at least 3 years old.

Cheers!

Maybe you need 2 cans of paint.

Regardless, it is normal.

Glad I opted for the underspray to help prevent the rusting. Especially being in Europe for a few more years!

Let me get this straight! You flew to Virginia from Alaska to buy a loaded jeep and then paid for over 1000.00 dollars of additional equipment including seat heaters then drove back to alaska to make plans to add additional equipment and you are worried about saving an extra 90 bucks on an oil change and tire rotation. I like your style.

I appreciate seeing as much info as possible about the new JK's - regardless of it being good or bad. The more we can share this info with each other, and with those who are thinking of joining us by purchasing JK's, the better.

Thanks, jeepers3.

Bill

wow thats funny, i started reading that thinking he flew to virginia from somewhere sorta close like New England, or maybe even Indiana or Illinios. Then i read ALASKA! there wasn't anything closer??? thats awsome though, might be a record.

About the surface rust, almost all new vehicles have that especially when they drive though an area that puts salt down on the roads in the winter. My old superduty looked that way and i picked it up the day it was dropped off at teh dealer. A few weaks and surface rust was on every bare metal spot under it. no big deal.

I'm assuming that there's alot of rocksalt on the roads in Alaska. Rocksalt will eat a Jeep alive. Try to keep the undercarriage clean as possible, there has also been a few write-ups on here about about how to stop the effects of "rocksalt rust". I'll try to find them for you.

I agree with the others, POR-15 is the greatest. I do my whole undercarriage, floorboards, axels, etc. Good Luck.

Jeepers3,

Excellent write-up and pics. Like your website too as fellow scuba diver.

If you are planning off-road adventures, what mods are you considering?

your not kidding, that is a bunch of driving....hope he got the extended, extended, extended, warranty....I got mine on the 10th as well and have 1300 miles, and going in for the first oil change on Monday. I'm going to the dealer and shall skip the Mobil1. I used Mopar oil in my TJ for the 50-60K miles I had it and never had problem one with the engine..
