2013 JKU 10A Build Thread - "Oscar"

To start, there was nothing wrong with "Saffi" (the 2010 JKUR we had). Last month, I was helping a friend determine a "fair" price for a 2014 Grand Cherokee and came across the Anvil colored JKU at Jeep's website. I then had to see it in person, and one of the two local dealerships had some 10A's in stock that had just arrived. Why did I drive to the dealership in Saffi? I dunno...

I took me about 3 hours to weigh everything out in my head: I was happy with Saffi, although re-gear, ball joints, and steering upgrades were up next on the build. I then fully examined the 10A to see exactly what could stay on the Jeep, and what I would need to upgrade/change. I was then able to convince myself that we were going to get a new Jeep (although all the time and money I spent on Saffi I wouldn't be able to get back).

The ultimate selling points for me/us: winch-ready front steel bumper with removable end caps, steel rear bumper that accepts the AEV carrier, steel front lower air dam to better protect the sway bar disconnect (instead of the flimsy plastic one), new Jeep with full warranty, all the creature comforts we had initially wanted in Saffi but didn't have sitting on the lot (remote start, leather, auto climate control), functional heat-reduction hood, stronger engine, 5 speed auto transmission, Rock Rail sliders, transmission temp readout, coolant temp readout, and oil pressure readout. The downfall... it's the Garmin-based navigation. I can no longer leave breadcrumbs while off-road to save trails. That means I'll need to buy another unit, like Nuvi or something.

I have this thing, where I wait until a new vehicle hits 1k miles before I start doing anything "major" to it. That time has come, so I figured I'd go ahead and start this build thread. It will be slow-going at the start, and you'll notice some items are a repeat from Saffi (I learned a few things from the build up on Saffi--things I like, things I want to do different). I will also do my best to provide more step-by-steps and some videos this time around.

As far as what you'll see in the next few months:
-Some "small" add-ons for convenience/protection (door sill protection, grab handles, deep well floor mats, locking gas cap, homemade grill "guard")
-aFe 2.5" MACHForce XP hi-tuck cat-back exhaust (49-46212)
-Cool Tech CB Bracket (and install the Cobra 25wxst I kept from Saffi)
-Volant PowerCore (Donaldson PowerCore filter) (176366) air intake with pre-filter
-RK 3.5" Mid-Arm Flex kit and extra add-on parts from RK (or the X-Factor Mid-Arm kit--still analyzing what I get more with the X-Factor kit vs adding what I know I "need" extra to the Mid-Arm kit from using it on Saffi, and which is more cost-efficient) (I was really satisfied with RK on Saffi, so I want to stick with what I know is a good ride)
-Tom Woods front driveshaft
-Steering flip kit with new TREs (haven't decided which one yet)
-AEV Pintlers, black
-AEV tire carrier
-35" Nitto Trail Grappler MTs (that I won from EJS earlier this year and have been sitting in the garage--thanks Nitto!!!)
-AEV ProCal (I don't want to use any tuners on my Jeep--I only want to calibrate settings)

That pretty much sums up what I want to do to "Oscar". He will be a DD, so I don't want to go too extreme. Anyways, hope you enjoy.

By the way, we agreed to name him "Oscar" because story has it that the Anvil color was conceptualized from a heavy-duty trash can in the design/engineer studio at Chrysler/Jeep. After "testing" the color, they learned that this "battleship gray" color did well in masking everyday dirt and road grime. The first thing we both thought of was Oscar the Grouch. And so "Oscar" was born.

First thing I did once we got home from the dealership: removed the front bumper end "caps". I like the look and function of a stubby bumper. That's also when I learned that the front lower air dam was pretty thick steel, and not the plastic ones that come on the other trim levels. It will now serve as a functional skid plate for the sway bar disconnect system.

We then added the door sill guards (didn't do a write-up on this, because it's pretty self explanatory). Just be sure you have the right sill guard for the correct side of the Jeep.

Although the 10A comes with the Jeep/Mopar slush mats, I wanted something that covered more area, and had a deeper well. I went with the Quadratec ones:

I also went with the Quadratec rear cargo mat, and cut out holes for the tie downs:

Added Quadratec grab handles in the front (thanks Quadratec for giving these away at the EJS Quadratec BBQ in 2012 (IIRC)). I used the Jeep ones from Saffi for the rear. If you have a soft top, or intend on using a soft top, you'll want to make sure that the grab handles you choose for the rear seat passengers are the "strap" kind that doesn't have the full plastic backing as it would cover the holes where the door surrounds would go--unless you intend on putting them somewhere else..

Very nice and I really like the front and rear bumpers and the hood. The color isnít bad either. Looking forward to watching it grow. By the way, are the bumpers and hood exclusive to only the anniversary model?
:cheers2:

I have a 10 A JK. Do we post our builds here or in the "Build" thead. I started over there.

From what I have gathered, for now, yes. This particular style hood and bumpers are only available on the 10A. I have also heard that by Spring of next year, the bumpers would be made available for sale to the public through Mopar (not really sure about this part... just what I heard). I don't know if the hood will be made available.

Doesn't matter. They at one time wanted them all on the build threads but not anymore.

Build looks good, can't wait to see the evolution of this one, a lot of your old one inspired me.

Personally I would start it here (this forum not thread). You will get a lot more activity in this JK specific forum. The choice is yours though. Also, if you already have a thread started in the Build Forum and would like it moved here to this forum just send me a PM and I’ll move it for you.
:cheers2:

Not sure about the bumpers but I think people can get their hands on a hood through Mopar. There is a guy over on wrangler forum that has a brand new, unpainted 10A hood for sale. I don't know if he had "connections" to get the hood, I just assumed that Mopar allows you to buy the setup.

Good looking ride BTW! :cheers2:
