2013 33's gear advice.

Sister-in-law has a 2013 JK 2 dr.
Specs:

V6
6spd
3.21 ratio. D30/D44
2.5 OME lift
285-65-18 (33's?) Trail Grapplers.

She wants to know what the best gear ratio to get her back to stock and good fuel mileage. She does not do much off roading other than some trails around here. Mostly around town and out of town highway driving.

So I ask ya'll, what are your thoughts? 4.10 or 4.56?

Why spend the $ to regear if she is only going to run 33's? Seems like a waste of $ to me.

No need to regear with 33's whatsoever, factory rubi tires are 32" with 3.21 gear ratio, so she is only 1" over factory tires

I'm running 3.73's and 285's on my 2013 now. They are about right for DD/Highway use. I do mostly 2 lane driving and would rather have 4.10's.

Problem with 4.10's is the price though. You can find Rubi 44 rear take outs for cheap, but 4.10's for the front 30 will cost as much as I paid for front/ rear 4.88's plus min. install kits.

3.21's have no place in a JK and I refused to even consider one with 3.21's. I made sure the JKU and the JK both had 3.73's.

Rubicons came with 3.73 or 4.10s.

Go test drive a stock rubicon with 4.10s. They have 32" tires so it will be a pretty close comparison. My 2012 unlimited rubicon got around pretty well with factory 4.10s, 32s and manual trans. I would imagine the 2 door would work very well with 4.10s and 33s. Even with 35s mine gets around pretty well most of the time. It did very well before I kept adding more weight and pop-up top.

Out of all the research I have done I'm sure that the 2010 wrangler rubicon came with 4.10s I'm throwing 35s on it in like 3 days so I can let you know how it drives when that's done

OP, I'd say 4.56 to get some of the pep back. 3.21's are a total dog and while the Jeep will function, it will not be very enjoyable to drive.

Imho 4.10s with the factory 32s was almost too much gear. Id imagine itd be great for the extra 1inch of the 33. But with 32s I found my self rising in rpm a little too fast

Agree with this. Shouldn't need a regear unless going to 35's.

If you really want gears, I'd say 4.10. You could probably find a take off set cheap in classifieds. Pretty sure you will need to change the carrier too.

4.10's would be nice, but you should price a 4.10 gear set for the Dana 30. There is nothing cheap about them. I don't think that 4.10's where very common in the dana 30 after 2007.

I have a 2012 with the 6 speed and it came with 3.21's. I drove it with the factory 32" tires with no issues until i put 35's on it. Once again, I drove it with no issues however the lack of low end power and freeway driving drove me to install 4.56's. I wouldnt want anymore gear with 35" tires than this, and 4.10's would have been perfect for 35's. 4.56's however will be good for 37"s when I upgrade.

If I were you, I wouldn't touch it. 33's are fine with 3.21 gears.

Location and driving conditions is a huge factor when it comes to what gears are fine for different people. What works for a flatlander that drives mostly interstate/highway won't necessarily be fine for someone in the mountains that mainly drives 2 lanes.

I think 3:21 with 33's would suck.
If it was 3:73's I wouldn't spend money to regear but 3:21's...

With that in mind IF i spent the money to regear it would be at least to 4:10.

I put 255/85/16 KM2's on my 2012 2dr Sport, 6M trans, 3.21 gears. 1st gear was pretty good around town, too high off road. 6th becomes useless on the highway in traffic or on hills. You have to drive 70+ on the highway to have power without downshifting. You have to use 4L off-road, but 1st in 4H was good in the snow. I traded the 12 for a 13 JKU with the 3.73 auto, for the tow rating (bought a boat) and put the same tires on it. The 3.73 Auto is great with those tires.
