2012 Road Trip MPG (Very Low)

First off I'd like to say I didn't buy my Jeep for MPG... That being said I was fairly shocked to average 14.5 on a few hundred mile road trip. My sticker says 16-21 so I was hoping to get near 17 on the Highway. I do have a Rubicon with 4.10's but not getting any better milage than city driving is pretty poor. (70mph and very little wind) Is there a chance something is wrong with my jeep or is this the norm??

your jeep is perfectly normal, let me put it this way, jeep lied about the mileage for the jeep 2012 pentastar with 4.1 rubi setup. If you look at 2013 rubi's the mileage dropped to soemthing like 15-19.

On the Jeep website today 19-21 mpg. I don't see how as the Rubi has 4.10s and 400lbs over a Sport w/3.21s

Well at least nothings wrong with it... This definitely isn't our road trip vehicle but one of the selling points to my wife is it gets better gas mileage than my old TJ. I think she stared a hole in the side of my face every time I pushed the button to check mpg. NOT COOL CHRYSLER, NOT COOL!!

I am getting 14.5 in my 4 door with 4:88's, a lift, 35's, and all of the heavy gear to go along with it.

Sounds a little low, but not much. If you said it got 16.0, I'd think that was perfectly normal.

I wonder how much the BFG Mud Terrains play a part in the poorer fuel economy.

I disagree. My anemic stock 2011 gets normally 20MPG on the highway, 16 MPG on a trip up north with 2 guys + gear + aluminum fishing boat, 14.5 is BAD IMO. That said, wranglers are as aerodynamic as a brick, and speeding up 10% faster uses way more then 10% more gas.

OP how fast where your you driving, and where you on cruise control?

I always lose about 10% this time of year from the winter blend gas they sell.
70 mph is pretty fast (and inefficient for these barn doors) Try 60 mph next time, you'll be surprised.

Are you calculating this by hand (miles verses gallons used) or using the computer? The computer can be pretty inaccurate.

You're full of ****

My 12 with a stick and 4.11s running the piss out of it would get 15 at the worst. Cruise control at 70 driving through the mountains i could grab 18.5-19 no problem

As my jeep sits now with 4.11s and 37s my milage is still between 14-16

Might be apples to oranges but my 2010 Sport 2 door 6 speed routinely gets 19-21 on long road trips, calculated by hand. Last year from NJ to Maine and back to NJ I came in right at 19, and that included a week of blasting around the mountains in Maine. Around town I drop to 16-17. I have never seen a number as low as 14 but then I didn't start checking til I was over 20k miles. Seemed to really get better around then. Keep in mind those are all 3.8 numbers. I actually thought the pentastar would be better.

I drove from Maine to California and back (9200 miles) in a 2012 Rubi with the 4.10's and 35's, auto, and averaged 15.5 mpg for the whole trip. That being said, I've averaged less just driving around town a little heavy on the pedal.

On the stock tires I can get 18 if I drive nicely. Or 14.5 if I dont.

Dont drive 70 go 60 mph the 4:10 is what kills you i have a dually which gets 24 mpg hwy but i drive 50-55mph hills do kill the mileage and heavy tires. My dually has 3.54 gears just for reference plus a diesel so a bit higher mpg than a jeep

Putting my hardtop on for roadtrips gains me about 1MPG over the softtop. It is also about 50% quieter. Fully loaded 4 door Rubicon I can almost touch 20MPG with the cruise set at 70. (Just Interstate mileage.) Drop my trailer out behind and I am luck to see 14.
