2009 Hill Assist PITA
Havin fun stalling on hills with this new stupid Hill Assist clutch on the 2009... it works well on slight inclines, level areas and down hill.... where I let up on the clutch slowly and it inches forward...
But on steeper inclines I really have to rev it high and slip the clutch to prevent it from stalling.... If I try to let it out like a normal clutch and give it more gas as I let it out I can feel the brake... then POP it stalls... Can someone teach me to drive a 6 speed again please! Why is this so different from the regular clutch... and whats the trick to this... It's only a problem on steeper hills!

I too had trouble at first. I was flooring the gas and poping the clutch to keep from stalling. Now it's like my HA got used to my driving style, I ease off clutch and give some gas and never come close to stalling.
I still question the ability of a computer to learn my driving style, but it seems to be happening or I am getting used to the Jeep. |

I believe the emergency brake is a better way to go.
If you really don't like it, do this: HSA Off If you wish to turn off the HSA system, follow this procedure: 1. Start with the engine off and vehicle in PARK (automatic transmission) or NEUTRAL with clutch out (manual transmission) with wheels straight. Apply parking brake on manual transmission vehicle. 2. Start the engine. 3. With the engine running, the brake applied, and the clutch out, rotate the steering wheel 180° counterclockwise from center. 4. Press the ESP OFF switch four times within twenty seconds. 5. Rotate the steering wheel 360° clockwise (180° clockwise from center). 6. Cycle ignition switch OFF then ON. 7. If the sequence was completed properly, the “ESP/ TCS Indicator Light” will blink several times to confirm HSA is off. Steps 1-7 must be completed within 90 seconds to turn off HSA. Repeat steps 1-7 to re-enable HSA functionality. |

That will turn off the HSA permanently? Good write up!
Do you have a procedure to turn the Low Tire warning light off permanently as well!

I actually like the HSA. I have driven standards all of my life and know how to start on a steep hill with a stick but the HSA makes it easier. I tested it the first day I owned the jeep on a very steep seasonal use road and it held me firmly in place after I removed my foot from the brake. In my opinion it erases some of the advantage of having an auto off road. At least you dont have to worry about rolling 3 feet anymore. I do however think that it is important to learn how to start a stick on a hill without this feature.

You don't need fast feet, you just need to know where you clutch engages, let it out to that point, move your foot from the brake to the gas and go. Should be no more roll back than an automatic.
