2007 jk rear end whine

hi all I have an 07 jk unlimited sahara with 123,000km. I had the transfer case and diff serviced by the dealer at 80,000km. now I am having a whining sound...normally I would think it was the u-joints but after inspection it looks like a "cv" joint on the driveshaft. can I change just this part? is it difficult?

If it is the drive shaft you will have to replace the whole drive shaft, I am not aware of a way to replace that joint.

I see lots of used ones for sale for pretty cheap if you want to stay with a stock unit.

both someone driving beside me said it was definitely coming from the diff area....I have some grease splatter on the rock shield beside the cv joint at the t-axle.

Yeah, sounds like the CV-usually the ring/pinion will start whining on decel, because of low fluid/gear wear, but both ways/w grease splatter at the CV, probably worth the change !

Good luck

The cv joint can come apart for inspection.

Even a new double cardon shaft is half that...or as said, watch eBay, used ones show up all the time for 100 bucks or so.

I just saw a stock rear jku shaft on my local classifieds website (like craigslist) for $125. I see them on jk-forum classifieds often too.

If you do have water in your diff, then you have been in some real deep water to get into the vent, or the vent came off or your axle seals went out and you got in deep water, any idea?

my diff was serviced by the dealer last November. one week later they changed some seals but were not specific. I rolled through winter up here and late in may I was in some mud but nothing that would have covered the diff. even had the fluid checked a month ago when the noise started. so at this stage i'm baffled. I saw the milkshake come out as the cover was pulled off. left axle shim had shifted. so, full bearing overhaul in the diff for $800. think, praying, the gear and crown are ok. mechanic thought my vent was plugged creating condensation.
