'09 X (lots of questions)

Hello,

Just bought my first new vehicle this past labor day '09 Wrangler X 2 door soft top with a 6 speed, and I love it! It is pretty bare bones as far as options go I have the RES radio head unit with the single CD player and no other dealer options.

Few questions in no particular order:

1. What is the best solution for connecting my iPhone to the radio for music purposes. I have read the UConnect threads and some of the MYGIG threads and both of those seem awesome of course, but not really looking for all of those features. Is there any where I can get a cable that will connect from the back auxiliary port to the dock connector on my iPhone.

I've tried a cheap cable and adapter from best buy which runs from the headphone port to the front auxiliary port, but this frankly sounds like garbage, i get intermittent static or loss of left or right channels and it just isn't working for me. Any ideas?

2. I'd like to get a bag for my rear windows, but all the bags I've seen (none of which even mention '09 wranglers yet) all have extra pockets for front windows on half-doors, I don't really want or need the extra pockets and it seems like the bags would just be that much bulkier. Does a bag for people with hard front doors even exist?

3. Can anyone recommend good seat covers for the front and back? I'm tempted to buy the "wet-suit" material ones from Wyckoff but thought I would ask here first and get some impressions on these, and see if anyone has any recommendations for back seat covers haven't seen any of those really.

4. Tow hooks? I'm assuming the '09 and recent wranglers are mostly the same here (big plastic bumper cover, which will likely need to be drilled or removed to install the hooks, guessing most of you have done this one, any advice?). What are my options for tow hooks, and where should I get them? I know these are required to do any organized trail rides and I'm eager to get my modifications done and get my jeep dirty.

5. Tires and wheels, these are definitely on my list of things to do soon, but may be slightly out of my budget for at least a month or two. I really haven't done much research on my options here yet since I want to get some high quality beadlocks and wheels and just have to wait awhile for these. Anyone with a JK have beadlocks with stock lift? Can i even buy beadlocks with the tire pressure sensors my jeep uses?

6. Am I crazy to think I can get away without a lift kit? Only reason I'm hesitant to lift is Virginia seems to be completely insane when it comes to vehicle inspections and ride height, but a lift kit may be in order some time later. Anyone in the North Virginia/DC area have experience with the lift kits, police and ride height tickets?

I really appreciate all the help you guys offer on these forums, one of the main reasons I have wanted a jeep is because I remember all the nice jeep owners I've encountered in the past when driving my dad's '94 Sahara in high school.

Pictures!
I'd just like to preface these by saying I'm a very bad photographer.

I'll help you with what I Know...

item #2...Quadratech sells a roll up bag set-up that rests behind you're rear roll bar when you have the top down. I don't own it yet, but it seems like the best option for storing your windows on the run.

item #6...Lift kit. You're going to hear an extreme reaction to what I'm about to say, but NO YOU DO NOT NEED A LIFT KIT. I have an '08 Rubicon and unless you're looking to put bigger than 33" tires on your rig, you just don't need to waste the money. My Rubi will literally go anywhere you would want to take a daily driver and you'll have just as much fun as someone sitting on a 6" lift with 38" tires. More so, actually since you won't have the "white knuckle" driving associated with worrying if you're going to roll your now top heavy lifted jeep.

That's pretty much all I'm willing to help you with since its the extent of my experience and observation. Hope it helps a bit.

Nice Jeep!

Welcome!

Seatglovers make a nice set that is compatible with SRS side airbags if equipped. If you don't have them, the options are unlimited.

As for tires, you can get 33's under there if you dont plan on disconnecting the swaybar and you have the proper backspacing on wheels! My wifes is the redrock and has 33's with no lift.

As for the lift, your call really. However I have inspected twice now in Va without and issue. As a matter of fact, we have about 200 members in our club that don't get many issues in Va.

Take your time, do your research and build your Jeep, how you want to, for what you want!

Check us out at www.novajeepers.com. Plenty of members in Alexandria. I work on East Braddock!

you guys have great looking Jeeps!! So you are saying that if you don't disco the sway bar on the red one, you won't rub off road with the 33s? If I was clear on that, that is good to know...

Yes. No rubbing on the redrock stop to stop runnining 285/70/17s.

Then again, that is my wifes Jeep and it is sitting in its natural habitat with concrete under her tires!

1. Not a fan of the iphone so dunno the answer. I know that from all the stereo's I've heard the aux cable works fine. The bad quality would be from a particular track or cd if it wasn't burned at a high level.

2. yes the bags for doors exist. You will get sick of putting your windows in a bag and doors in a bag constantly. Just be carefully and put them in a garage or something and you'll be fine.

3. Can't help you out here, I don't have any.

4. There is a writeup on installing front hooks on here. I did it to mine. You just get stock hooks and mod the plastic bumper. For the rear you can find a stock hook or get a tow hitch and use a d-ring or tow hook.

5. "for now" you can get rubi takeoffs for 800-900. Then you can save up for the wheels/tires you want. Tire pressure sensors would have to be taken out of the old wheels and put in the new wheels, or get a 2nd set of them.

6. You don't NEED to lift the vehicle if you are going to do mild wheeling. I have 32" BFG M/Ts and I wheel with a YJ with 4" lift and a ZJ with 6" lift. I go everywhere they go.

#1 - I have an iPhone 3G and I use the headphone to Aux cable and mine sounds fine. You might want to try an MP3 Player or CD player and see if it sounds the same. If it does, could be the cable or your head unit. If it sounds fine. I would say something is up with your iPhone.

come on do not feed BS on newbies. There is NO white knuckle driving on a properly installed and quality lift. And their is no "top Heavy" feeling on a lifted jeep providing you have put the appropriate wheels on as well. In fact I would be willing to be that a lifted jeep is more stable then a non lifted one as the width to height is not as great as stock.

Bear in mind, this is his Daily Driver. And I don't care how comfortable you "feel", a higher Rig is going to have a higher center of gravity and hence be more prone to rollover than a stock height JK. That's simple physics. That said, yes, you can put the right equipment on the rig to negate or diminish this problem. But given the budget constraints he seems to be under, and the fact that this is, for now, his DD, a lift is not needed whatsoever. That was original question after all, can he get away with not lifting it...the answer is yes.

Thanks for the help guys, I really didn't mean to stir up trouble with my lift question. I'm not really in the market for a lift at the moment but I'm almost definitely going to install a lift some day but the truth is I live in the DC metro area, so my jeep is not going to get very many miles so I wouldn't exactly call it a "daily" driver even lifted wouldn't be too worried about driving it, more just the legality and the hassle I'd get from the law.

I'm not really worried about rolling it with or without a lift kit. I'll just say I have some experience with my dad's older YJ and I have a lot of respect for these vehicles and what they can and can't do.

As for the couple of people that offered insight on my music question, it doesn't seem like the problem is my iPhone maybe it's just the cable and adapter I have to use to plug it in to the AUX port.

Dryfter maybe the 3G is different than my original iPhone, on my phone since it has the 3rd lead on the headphone pin (for the controls and microphone) that other normal headphones don't have, I have to use an adapter (which i think is where all my problems are coming from), what cable do you use, and does it require an adapter?

BirdsFanVa, that bumper on your jeep looks great, good to know you haven't had any trouble with inspections here, I will be looking in to something like that are you still able to retain all your airbag and safety features with that bumper?

My seats do not have the optional airbag feature so my options for covers sound pretty good, has anyone used that factory "wet-suit" ones?

http://www.wyckoffchryslerparts.com/20jewrseco1.html

I like to take my dog out to parks to swim and play but... I'm not thrilled with the thought of torn seats. Anyone know if these will fit the '09 seats and if I can get a matching back seat cover?

Just for the heck of it, two more sources of fun for me:
