08 JK glass chipping problem ????

I have an '08 Wrangler with 14,000 miles. The jeep is in mint condition. The elbow grease keeps it nice and shiny when it's not on the trail. Everytime I wash my windshield, I have been noticing more and more micro-chips in the windshield. I take extra precaution to keep my windshield out of harms way just because of the nature of the vulnerable vertical windshield. In my mind, with me being so cautious, I don't understand how all the 1000's and 1000's of micro-chips could occur. When I drive into the sun, the entire windshield looks so dirty and I know it is clean but chipped. I have run a razer blade accross the windshield to confirm it is indeed chipped.

I don't understand. I feel the windshield could be defective. Is this possible? Has anyone else had these issues? What do you think I should do? I am extremely frustrated about this.

That's the life of a near vertical windshield. I saw a vendor at the SEMA show last fall that sold a vehicle specific film that's applied to windshields to save on pitting and breaking. It's crystal clear and lasts for a couple years.

I'm on my second windshield. 30,000 miles. This one is about 5,000 miles old and looks like crap already. Vertical windshields have no life. Even the bug / wind deflector doesn't help one tiny bit.

Yep. I typically own 5 or 6 vehicles at a time. The only windshields I've replaced in the last 20 years have been on my CJs/YJs/TJs and JKs. I lost the windshield on the '07 JK at 4,000 miles. I've got 200 miles on the new '09 JK and already have a chip.

Cost depends on your insurance.

Windshield replacement

Got my 09 Rubi Unlimited last August and had about 6 chips after heading up to the Sierras just about every weekend during the winter. Back in February a huge crack formed right above the defroster area when I forgot that I had it running at full heat with it being 20 degrees outside. I decided to replace it out w/ an OEM and of pocket it was about $275. I believe that an aftermarket one would run about $200 or so… just the nature of an upright windshield

From what I've heard, the JK's windshield is pretty crappy in particular. Lots of people have replaced these windshields already. I've owned four other Jeeps, never had to replace a single windshield, nor the other 12 vehicles that I've owned.

I just replaced mine, cost me around 250. Cheaper than the deductible.

got 4000 miles on mine and no chip, feeling lucky actually. I have an Escape with 130000 and it is on it's 4 th winshield and my Mustang is on it's 2 nd. I think the vertical doesn't help but mostly it is our terrible frwys and the like, along with no cleanup on sides and the occasional work truck. I feel all I can do is be aware of it and try to stay away from things when I can.

I have a '08 rubi and this winter have got 10 chips and 1 crack. Good thing is they are all on the passanger side. Living in northern BC the seem to put gravel on the ice, not good for any windshields.

I had an 08 before and when I bought my 09 thank god the dealer offered free windshield replacement for 5 years (600 bucks) a steal if you ask me. if you can get this offer I would definitely recommend taking it. my 09 is 3 weeks old and I've got a chip already

4 Magic words

Zero Deductible Glass Coverage

Ask your insurance Company... Free Chip Repairs and if they can't fix it they will replace it. Usually costs $5 - $10 per month... Worth Every Penny on a Wrangler. The only Catch is that the Windshield must be in good shape to have the coverage added.
