x2 its not just jeeps that get tailgated, my lifted truck got tailgated all the time, not to mention ppl passing me a thinking its cool to cut me off and see if their car will fit under my front bumper (had 10" lift and 38's). I wired in a 55watt work light on the rear bumper so that it would shine right in the windsheild of most cars that were closer than 20 ft from my bumper. works well if they flip their highbeams on too. it doubles as a nice spotlight for backing down my driveway at night and as a work light. my jeep will be getting one soon also, after i figure out where mount it
i also tap the brakes a few times to warn them (just enough to turn the light on but not slow down. then if they continue its their own fault when the little "chipmunk" run in front of me.

Ahhhhhhh the old "moonshiners" trick I did that on an old Corvette I had. It was a blast to use when people wanted to hang with me through the twisties.

Dropping it a couple gears is also a pretty good trick.

I had a guy that had to be less the 5 feet off my bumper at 55 for at least a couple miles. I tapped the brakes and every time he would just speed back up to be on my *** again. Finally pissed me off enough that I dropped it into 3th from 5th, lost a good 10 mph. Ha backed WAY off for the rest of the trip.

Well, in that case, hammer the brakes.

Around here, we have people that feel that they're entitled to use the left lane for some strange reason. They'll sit in the left lane doing 5 to 10 mph under the speed limit, and inevitably, these people roam in packs, causing sever congestion wherever they drive. It's not uncommon around here to see 2 Tahoes or H2s or F350s that are driving parallel to each other holding up traffic for 1/2 mile.

I get tailgated all the time. One time a coworker was tailgateing me and the next day I asked him why he was doing it? And he said I was in a hurry. I said well next time I bet a cat runs in front of me, I slam an my brakes and you buy me a new jeep. Never tailgated me again. I used the down shifting in my wifes car, go slower the closer they get. One time on a four lane a guy came up on my backend of my truck,could not see his headlights, I tapped the brakes to get him to back off. That did not work so I hit the brakes hard. And you could see the car take a nose dive and smoke come from the wheels. He passed me and than I saw 2 little kids in the car with him. I yelled at him "that's a good way to get your kids hurt". He flips me off said f--- you and speeds away.

The one thing that I like about the mud tires is they slow the jeep down fast without having to break. When someone tail gates me I just let off the gas and the person behind me gets the message.

I get tailgated constantly too. If i feel like being an *** i'll stop and wait through a green light. Or slow down as much as i can stand. More then a few times ive almost got hit. I was stopped on a hill and this guy in an f250 i think comes up at probably 30 mph to a red light and almost slams into the back of me.. he had to swerve out of the way into oncoming traffic. The guys bumper ended up near my front driver side door. My theory is its our tail lights that drives them to tailgate or maby as other have said, jeep envy. People just dont pay attention in general and think everyone else on the road needs to bend to their will.

If you guys really want a good tip for when this doesn't apply, ie: you're in the far right lane, there is traffic to your right and you can't move, or in the case of someone just being a ****, try this little trick.

Slow down. Not with the brakes. Just take your foot off the gas. Slow it to about 45-55, the slowest safe highway speeds. If you think about it, they're tailgating you to send a message. The message is "Speed up NOW." You're simply telling them...."Message received, and NO."

Basically I have seen drivers get so enraged by this (because it's the exact opposite of what they want), that they LOSE IT. Babbling incoherently in my rearview, while making insane hand gestures. All making me smile.

If he hits me, I didn't brake check him, no witnesses to a crime because they're isn't one. And 99 times out a hundred, it results in getting passed within a mile or two by a guy who's going to die from stress related illnesses long before me.
