Wheel fell off while driving! Nice!

Well, the rear wheel fell off. Yep, fell off. I felt the rear of the jeep wobbling around, so i slowed down, it wobbled more, i slowed down more. I stopped in the side of the road, everything seemed tight, driveshaft, u bolts.

I finally limp it to my street, and i make the turn, and the jeep falls on top of the tire, it was wedged between the axle and the rear quarter panel... What a great feeling that was.

I walk to my house, grab the jack, walk back down to the HEEP, put it on 4 low, put the jack under the pumpkin and start to drive. I make it all of 4 feet, and the jack falls over, and so does the jeep. Next i put under the axle tube, drive about 50 feet, and it fell off. I finally limp it into my driveway.

I look, and the wheel studs failed on the axle. They looked kinda rusty, and the scored up near the base, but i thought theyd be alright, im guessing with the strain from that spool, they just broke one by one, until the wheel fell off.

Backing plate, as well as rear brake is fubar'd.

All in all, it sucks ***, but im just happy it didnt happen on the highway/near anyone that could get hurt etc.

I guess i need new studs now

Tommorow i gotta grab some pics of the street, theres a grind mark from the jack all the way down the road. lol.

That sucks. I had a similar experience several years ago in a 2000 Blazer. I was asleep in the passenger seat and a friend was driving 80+ on the interstate about 4 am. I woke up to a huge bang and terrible screaching noise while my friend was wrestling the steering wheel to the shoulder. Got out and everything for the drivers side front was gone. Wheel, brakes, and all. Everything but the axle. Wasn't a cheap fix and we never found the wheel.

I'm sure some feller found it when he was cleaning out the gutters on his house 1/4 mile away

Them things have a tenancy to take flight! Was in the back of my truck going down the interstate (yes someone else was driving it) my older brother was beside us. He hit a pot (crater) hole in the road and his spare tire bounced about 4 feet out of the bed and landed tread down in the road

I'm sure I'm exaggerating but it looked like the thing went 50 feet in the air and came down flat in some guys 80 something honda's hood and STUCK

After standing on the side of the road for a bit giving people a chance to calm down and what not, the driver of the honda just started laughing - then explained to us the mental process that occurred as he was driving down the road thinking to himself about needing a new set of tires and then OUT OF THE HEAVENS... comes a tire

Maybe the added stress of the spacers led to this? The description was quite funny with the falling jack and all.
