The man who owns nearly 45 Jeeps!

This story (published in Autocar India March, 2013 issue) is about a Jeep enthusiast in India who has over the last 40 years, collected nearly 45 Jeeps (and still counting) ranging from MB, GPW, M38, M38A1 to the CJs.

Doubtful. Here in the Philippines you can pick up WWII to Vietnam-era Jeeps that start and run for $2k-$10k, depending on the condition. If it's not running, could be $1k or less.

Here's one for $4k: https://m.olx.ph/ad/107381739/willys...ale/9a683c9f83

Too bad I can't bring one home with me. :'(

Apart from the Jeeps -mainly CJ2As, CJ3Bs, Station wagons and FC series -assembled in India by Mahindra between 1948 and 1973 under a 25-year license with Willys Overland, Kaiser and AMC, there were many MBs and GPWs used during WW II in north-eastern India and left behind after the war by the Allied forces.

The dominance of Mahindra in the Indian market coupled with the strict government regulations and 400% duty on vehicle imports ensured that virtually no CJ 5s or 7s came in to India. Only a few CJ-6s imported by UNICEF and WHO were allowed to be used by these agencies in India and later taken over by the government and sold to the public through auctions. During the 1965 and 1971 wars between India and Pakistan, many M38A1s were captured by the Indian army and found their way to civilian hands in India.

Sadly, due to the very high gasoline-compared to the government-subsidized diesel prices, gasoline powered Jeeps -including most of the WW II, CJ-6s and M38A1s were fitted with Indian made diesel engines in the 1980's and the 90's. However, a very small number of die-hard Jeep enthusiasts still hang on to their priced possessions which still have their original gasoline engines.
