Where are my damn keys?
|
Around 1983 or so, my friends and I all had CJ-5s and went wheeling almost every weekend. Usually old logging or fire roads. Somehere southwest of Roanoke VA (have no idea where, it's been 20 years) we were on a fire road in the Appalachian foothills. It was no longer maintained, and was pretty overgrown. Well up into our trip up the mountain we see what looks like a bus way off in the woods to our right, but we keep going without stopping. We all had CBs, and were asking each other "did you see that?" and we planned to stop on the way back unless we found another way out. Well we get to the top, see the old firetower (disappointment, they had removed the stairs) and start back the way we came. We get to the place where we saw the bus and stop to check it out.
60's vintage school bus, but painted flat black. Had a porch built onto it, and many windows boarded up. On a post about 20 feet from the bus was a deer skull with a broad-tip arrow sticking out of it. The bus hood was up, no engine or radiator. Lots of old garbage around, I remember seeing some rusted Pabst Blue Ribbon cans. Anyway, one of my buds sticks his head in the door, and yells for us. The bi-fold door had been replaced with a screen door. Inside were bunks, and a sink area. Someone had obviously lived here for some time. Then we see the knives. Many knives. Had to be 20-30 of them. Looked like about 6-8 inch double-edged blades in wood boxes. Being chicken**** teenagers, we got the hell out of there, but we did have enough wits about us to mark the spot on the fire road. We tied my buddies red Nebraska Cornhuskers sweatshirt to a tree right next to the trail. We called the county sheriff, gave him the details, and told him where to find the sweatshirt. About three weeks later, we were told "we can't tell you more than this, but we closed an old case because of what you found." Kinda creepy.

Not really wheeling related.. but when I was about 16 (1980) and lived in Hawaii, I got into exploring lava tubes (sorta like caves) out in the lava fields. A friend and I would search around in them with flashlights looking for old Hawaiian artifacts (bone fish hooks, lures, gourd containers..etc.) In one large lava tube, we found a small wooden box. Of course being 16 my first thought was that it was some sort of hidden treasure. You can imagine my shock when I carefully removed the lid only to find a tiny skeleton wrapped in old tapa cloth. Obviously buried after Hawaii was discovered by Christian Missionaries but still very old. In another lava tube, we found a large skeleton laid out with old wooden spears and daggers at his side and remains of his feather cape indicating some sort of royalty. In yet another, we found a skeleton kinda scattered around the cave floor.. that one was actually only a couple hundred yards from a very popular beach on the Big Island.. it is now a huge resort area. These were all found by two boys with absolutely no experience in about a one month period. I could only imagine what a trained arceological crew could find on the Waimea Slopes of the Big Island..

I was wheeling one day on our usual route but it was the first time in a while. Well we went down a hill to a clearing and saw a place where someone might have camped. We went over to see if they have forgoten anything (sometimes you can find knifes of other trinket things) and we noticed a crap load of porn. I mean every where there were movies to magazines, and one well lets say toy. It was crazy! it was all ruined becasue it rained the day before and we left the toy were it was.
We think a wife got pissed at her husband and threw everything out or some people were having some fun and it started raining. The stuff was there till the cleaning crew came about two months later. I don't think much can top that at least in my life time.

As for other things I've found while 'wheeling, someone mentioned stumbling upon a couple going at it. Yeah, I've surprised about three couples so far -- two of them didn't stop what they were doing but I got a smile and a big wave both times. They weren't hidden in the bushes at all, but had just parked their vehicle next to the trail and had at it in broad daylight - one couple was outside the vehicle, that was a bit daring I thought. My then-wife would never have done anything like that!

on a wheeling trip there is a very old trailer with a small drive that goes to up to and so one day instead of passing it we drove up. it appeared to be empy as i was the first to go in. we did find some strange stuff inluding a old box of moth balls and various kitchen utincils. there we appliences scattered about the woods around it. But there wierdest thing by far was there was a baby doll nailed to a tree. That was it for us and we were outa there.

This thread is the best i have seen in a long time.
My buddy and I found this abandoned house up in the hills right behind where we live pretty far off the beaten path. We were amazed it was so close to where we live. It is right on the Orange county/ riverside county line in Southern CA high up in the hills. ![]() ![]() ![]() (We had to add our own few bullet holes) This is another cool thing we found ![]() After some research we found out it is a weather station of some sort. Seriously about the size of a house in the middle of nowhere. And one of my all-time fav pictures of just random stuff we come across ![]() One cool story we recently had is when we were up wheeling right before Christamas and came across a helicopter pad. It was high up in the hills and we figured it was for fighting forest fires or something. So we are stopped just chilling enjoying the view and sure enough a helicopter comes in. It circles while we move our jeeps and then lands right in front of us. At first we thougth we were in big trouble but we talked the pilot (who was totally cool) and turns out they do maintance on the cell towers and he was up there to check something. I've never been that close to a helicopter so it was rad. (stupid me forgot my camera) ![]()
