From Austin to Moab......My Trip Log

Hey y'all,

I finally made some concrete plans for a trip to Moab! The plan is to leave this Saturday afternoon and come back next weekend. We should have at least 4 full days in Moab! We're towing the Jeep and will bring our mountain bikes, too. My friend Travis is coming with me since I'm not crazy enough to make this trip completely solo.

The plan is to update this thread with info. and pics from the trip at the end of each day. So if you're interested in the adventures of two guys who've never been to Moab before, feel free to check back starting this weekend. If you're not interested, well, what are you doing here anyway?

Some of the trails we're looking at are Hell's Revenge, Moab Rim, Golden Spike, Fins 'n' Things, Metal Masher, and we'll see what else.

Now it's back to work getting everything ready for the trip!
Tommy

Saturday 2-21-09

So we hit the road on Saturday afternoon around 3:30. We had lunch with some folks from the Bronco forum (fullsizebronco.com) and headed out after that. Travis has an '86 Bronco and I used to have a '96 model.

"One of these things is not like the other!"

They were all lined up for pics so I had to pull in front!

We made it to Fort Sumner, NM around 1 am and called it a night...

Here's all the pics from day 1.

Sunday 2-22-09

Sunday we headed out around 6:30 am only to find a small leak in one of the trailer tires. We topped it off and kept going. A couple hours later it was again really low so we replaced it (it had a nail in it).

Saw some interesting billboards along the way. This bull must REALLY like Dairy Queen!

After the crappy roads and backwoods towns in New Mexico we were really glad to see these signs....

Lots of snow in Colorado, but fortunately none on the highways.

This was just outside Moab. Kinda neat...

Getting close!

Beautiful scenary...

We made it! Time for a cold one!

Sunday 2-22-09 (cont'd.)

Love this backdrop!

Travis and I celebrate my birthday the night we arrive to Moab and follow it up with dinner and drinks at the Moab Brewery.

Travis then thought it'd be funny to take a pic as I deal with my bank to cancel my debit card. I accidentally left it at a gas station in NM. No, I normally don't use those ghey bluetooth thingies!

Travis still hasn't quite mastered the use of a keyboard.

We checked the forecast for the next day and it wasn't good. We made plans to hit Fins 'n' Things and hopefully more if time and weather allowed.

Day 2 Pics.

Monday 2-23-09

Monday we took it easy. The weather was cold and rainy. It was pretty nasty so we decided to wheel Fins 'n' Things since it's supposedly pretty mild. Here's a couple pics....

We decided to trailer to the trail. This was the road to the trail head. Like I said, it was wet!

Even when wet, slickrock is still some of the grippiest stuff around.

At least it wasn't bitter cold and the rain eventually was just a light drizzle. It remained overcast the whole day, unfortunately.

Overall, Fins 'n' Things was a good warmup trail, but certainly wasn't very challenging. It ended up being the only trail we did on Monday. We decided to take care of the flat trailer tire, my bank card, and some other stuff in the afternoon. That night we formulated a gameplan for the next day.

Cliff Hanger and Moab Rim Trails, here we come!!

Day 3 pics are here.
