Your thoughts on electric fan conversion?

I was thinking about going to an electric cooling fan for gas mileage purposes but im not sure how well it will hold up to off roading. Also im not too sure if the benifits will out way the cost of going to an electric fan over the OE clutch style.

IM sure someone on here has done it or at least has better idea of how well it will work. So what are your thoughts?

I'm planning on putting the fan from the 2.4L into my 2.5L experimental toy at some point. I'm not sure that it will net enough MPG savings to pay for itself over the course of my ownership. I figure I'll see an engine that revs more freely, but not much more.

It is very important that any electric fan flow as much air as the OEM one, if you do choose to go this route.

We use fans here that are used for automotive cooling. They are decent quality, but..... I don't know...
It seems it would be really hard to beat the dependability of the stock fan it comes with. It's put on there for a good reason.
These electric draw about 13A running free- about 26A at startup and around 17A when loaded. I believe that energy exists in one form or another and that DC wouldn't have put a fan in there that was a fuel monger if there was a better way out. You would be putting alot more load on your electrical system.
I could get one of these fans for nothing (or at least cost)...... but I don't know....
If my rad was getting dusted up or whatever, I'd want something on the overkill side. These fans just don't tickle me that way.

Doing one as we speak in my '04 Rube. Be Cool complete kit, alum rad, 16" fan. I have a 160A alternator so I'm not concerned about power supply. I wanted to free up static power loss spinning the stock fan clutch, when I dunked my Rube the fan clutch failed, offered no resistance whatsoever, and the power gain was noticable.

A mechnical will provide more cfm of air movement, but takes power to spin. If a mechanical fails, it will stay engaged, or it won't. Either way the fan will still rotate creating some level of cfm to help keep you from overheating.

A single electric fan......... will either work, or fail, and you overheat.

I'm sure there's mpg to be gained, but I can't think of one install focused on mpg gains. Shutting down the fan to cross creeks, to gain power, yes, but not for mpg.

The dependability of the stock fan is hard to beat...!

Does anyone know what kind of cfm the stock fan moves?
I was looking at a big 16 incher that moves 1500cfm. It was used to cool my buddies big block street/drag car and i can pick it up way cheap!

my only concern is im afraid of it failing due to water but if stock fan clutches do the same then maybe ill go for it. Im still trying to weigh out the cost to benifit ratio.

PS. Anyone who has done the conversion please give me your opinions!

I'm considering this conversion so that I can turn my fan off when I enter a mud pit or keep it running for a few minutes if I turn my jeep off.

I agree its hard to make the change, stock fan is hard to beat.
