Yes..another HEMI build...

For those of you who dont know me, I already have a 2006 LJ with a 6.1 Hemi in it that is 90% finished... check it out on the link below... right now its hidden in an undisclosed location as my divorce is not final yet... yes i said it. hidden. its gonna stay that way for now. i have no idea, that jeep isnt registered to me....

I decided it was time to get back into it and what better way than to build another Jeep that isnt registered to me either. Im going to build this one for a little bit of sense of achievement and accomplishment. i tell myself that im eventually going to sell it so it keeps my budget right and on track... yes keep it within the 35" tire range and 4" lift... we shall see how that goes.

What Im starting with.. I found a 2000 Sport 4.0 auto full doors HT that has been stored in a pole barn since the PO brought it back from Alabama. He stated he only put on about 3k in the last 2.5 years, just taking the grand-kids around in the summer. The jeep is clean and rust free, the frame is rock solid and clean. no bubbles on the fenders, the factory gas tank skids has really no marks on it whatsoever. the only things i found wrong so far is the paint on the leading edge of the hood is cracking and theres one small dent in it. has a factory mopar hitch on it too... engine compartment is clean as well, the brake lines are still clean and factory black painted. the harnesses all appear to be un-molested. still has the stock radio in the dash.

the plan.. totally going 5.7 truck motor this time to avoid ALL THE HEADACHES the 6.1 gave me and any of challenges the 5.7 'car' motors present as well... i conquered the 6.1 challenges but going to avoid them this time. i want this done in days not years also this time, im not starting the motor swap till i have all the pieces i need to get it done in hand.

the challenge is to see how budget minded this project will be/can be. the only true unknown variable right now is 'how much i end up paying for the hemi/trans.' i know that i will only buy a truck motor and at that, the most cost effective way is to get one that is already mated to an 545rfe [with a complete harness is a bonus]! if you dont get one that is mated, you most likely will have to incur the costs of all the intermediate things like a torque converter, new flex plate, crank bolts, bell housing bolts, all the other misc missing bolts, starter, inspection covers etc....

working on sourcing the 5.7 hemi 545rfe driveline.
these parts are already on the way
  • motor mounts
  • 05 TJ fuel pump
  • 02 TJ cluster
  • 05 ram computer
  • 1.25 body lift
  • shifter bracket
  • GC gas pedal and mounting bracket
  • adhesive heat shield for the firewall

looking to pick up a rolled over 04 durango tomorrow with a newer 5.7 jasper hemi in it with 30k miles or so on it. hopefully that goes as planned.

going to order up a novak cable shifter for the TC. i was going to get the cable and a few brackets from a GC, but time vs cost showed the novak to be the better choice for now. probably have to 'adjust' the transfer case bracket to work with the 545rfe but ill wait and see on that.

i have a set of GC 5.7 exhaust manifolds in the garage but im leaning towards getting a set of the BBK shorty headers for it. just to let it breathe see there the budget beings to stretch. i have a tera trans mount left over from my hemi project but unless i go with their belly up pan im going to have to fab a mount up. for less than the 459+ ship they want for that belly pan, i am leaning towards doing a TMR skid with maybe a 2" drop and a fabbed in removable trans/tc mount. total cost.$400. that way you would end up with the ability to drop the t/c skid independently of the trans. i have this same style set up in my LJ but my TC skid is crazy beef, custom built by KORE. i truly love that the T/C skid plate is sitting in the garage and the drive train is in without it

i am toying with the idea of getting a 05 ram harness and deciphering the wiring on the living room floor or just ordering a harness from chris for this project. i got all the pin outs from my dealer friend yesterday for the 00 tj 02 tj 05 tj and 05 ram clusters and ECMs. they are sitting on the table now.

im deciding which 4" lift to get, truly dont want to spend more than 500 on the basic lift kit. thinking either R/C or Zone right now. might grab a set of adjustable uppers for the F & R. saw a set on ebay for 240. complete 4" with adj uppers for 750, thats fair.... Ill take suggestions on the 4" kit. im not budgeted for a currie short arm or anything like that right now. ill even take a good condition 4" lift that i can refinish for it.

ill post some pics here in the next few days...

Nice, I'm in early on this one.

Do you have an estimated budget for this project?

single... most definately...lol

i would like to stay under 7000 for hemi swap with lift wheels tires bumpers and winch setup. i think could do it if i eliminated the 'extras' and make the harness myself. im sitting at around 5500 right now per excel with everything except wheels tires and the hemi harness. the everything includes the novak shifter, SYE, bbk headers, winch and doing the custom separated trans mount skid plate set up. if i clipped the headers and skid, that would take $700 off top. next time around im considering making my own hemi mounts. i will be talking with my cad guy on that.

i could go 'hot rod harness' on the hemi and eliminate the emissions crap and related costs but for resale not sure if thats the right way to go. we dont have emissions checks in michigan like everywhere does.

the harness can vary from 350 for a donor, if the durango one wont work, to 1500 for chris to do it. i dont see a reason other than time for me not to atleast try and figure it out. just need to find the correct pin removal tool to start, i have one of those $120 sets of snap on ones, but im going to guess 'that one' isnt gonna be in the kit i have. LOL

currently the plan doesnt account for any residual return from selling off what i can from the durango or the 00TJ. so anything i get back will be a bonus.

alot hinges on the cost of the hemi combo... tomorrow i will know more!

Good luck with it. I'll be watching.

As far as the wiring goes give it a shot...if it doesn't work out you can always get with Chris. Just be forewarned..its the holiday season and everything slows down a little. Shipping parts takes time (unless you pay for overnight) etc. He may be very busy too and there may be a wait to get it done. I will say that Chris was a ton of help with my conversion and his work on the harness was nothing short of perfect.

As far as the headers go I know a guy who just finished his swap in Washington...he wasn't able to use headers due to how close they were to the steering support on the driver side. He had to use GC manifolds. You'll need a 4 cyl model steering shaft support too...add that to your parts list.
I'll add a link to his thread http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/jeep-...-tj-2-5-l.html

Another thread from here on a TJ done by MGimelli..Turned out really nice....http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f22/9...build-1212248/

thanks

yeah chris did my harness for my 6.1 in my LJ... i have been wiring cop cars for 6 years, just a matter of time and space right now. no space to lay that big harness out. i ran into the headed issue on the 6.1 and re-worked the shaft. the headers are just'one of those trick things' that would make the engine and actually bring a benefit. if i have to 'adjust the pillow block' alittle bit im ok with that.. im just not notching any frames or anything like that this time around.

so driving the 3 hours to attempt to collect the rolled durango was abust. atleast the weather was nice. as soon as the truck had some power i was finally able to get the mileage.. ummm 210k, sure the motor has 30k but 210k is alittle more than alot of 'highway miles'... the motor wouldnt even roll over, so i thanks thanks and began the cruise back home.

back to the search for the hemi/trans.

a guy text me today and told me his lj was still for sale... maybe ill list the recently acquire tj on CL so i can get the LJ. hmmmm

the computer, fuel pump and body lift showed today... and the pile continues to grow.. ahahahhhhaaahhhhh!!

i cruised thru your thread.. nice job! i be cruising thru the pirate one here later on. thanks for the links, im always up to learn or see something new.

Good to see you back in the game. I have finally gotten into the swap game as well. A 430HP LS3 E-Rod motors 50 state smog legal complete with harness, cats, ECU and everything need to do the swap for around 8K is hard to beat.

Just finishing a LS3 376in 480hp swap in our KOH LJ and really looking forward to stretching its legs! Hopefully next week I can take it out!

Looking forward to seeing your build take shape.

we even talked about building a KOH jeep. he said he had though of it before so it think with the proper motivation, it may just become a reality. im thinking 6.4 LOL.

send me a vid or post it! love to see it, especially with the HDMI cable hooked to the big screen LOVE IT.

spent the weekend doing family stuff etc.. parts chasing resumes tomorrow after the divorce procedings... hell ill be on CL while waiting to be called in to the court room.

i have pics of the new to me tj. ill get them up as soon as i remember how to do it from photobucket so i can resize them. hell first thing i need to do is remember my password.. !!!!!
