For those of you who dont know me, I already have a 2006 LJ with a 6.1 Hemi in it that is 90% finished... check it out on the link below... right now its hidden in an undisclosed location as my divorce is not final yet... yes i said it. hidden. its gonna stay that way for now. i have no idea, that jeep isnt registered to me....
I decided it was time to get back into it and what better way than to build another Jeep that isnt registered to me either. Im going to build this one for a little bit of sense of achievement and accomplishment. i tell myself that im eventually going to sell it so it keeps my budget right and on track... yes keep it within the 35" tire range and 4" lift... we shall see how that goes.
What Im starting with.. I found a 2000 Sport 4.0 auto full doors HT that has been stored in a pole barn since the PO brought it back from Alabama. He stated he only put on about 3k in the last 2.5 years, just taking the grand-kids around in the summer. The jeep is clean and rust free, the frame is rock solid and clean. no bubbles on the fenders, the factory gas tank skids has really no marks on it whatsoever. the only things i found wrong so far is the paint on the leading edge of the hood is cracking and theres one small dent in it. has a factory mopar hitch on it too... engine compartment is clean as well, the brake lines are still clean and factory black painted. the harnesses all appear to be un-molested. still has the stock radio in the dash.
the plan.. totally going 5.7 truck motor this time to avoid ALL THE HEADACHES the 6.1 gave me and any of challenges the 5.7 'car' motors present as well... i conquered the 6.1 challenges but going to avoid them this time. i want this done in days not years
also this time, im not starting the motor swap till i have all the pieces i need to get it done in hand.
the challenge is to see how budget minded this project will be/can be. the only true unknown variable right now is 'how much i end up paying for the hemi/trans.' i know that i will only buy a truck motor and at that, the most cost effective way is to get one that is already mated to an 545rfe [with a complete harness is a bonus]! if you dont get one that is mated, you most likely will have to incur the costs of all the intermediate things like a torque converter, new flex plate, crank bolts, bell housing bolts, all the other misc missing bolts, starter, inspection covers etc....
working on sourcing the 5.7 hemi 545rfe driveline.
these parts are already on the way
- motor mounts
- 05 TJ fuel pump
- 02 TJ cluster
- 05 ram computer
- 1.25 body lift
- shifter bracket
- GC gas pedal and mounting bracket
- adhesive heat shield for the firewall
looking to pick up a rolled over 04 durango tomorrow with a newer 5.7 jasper hemi in it with 30k miles or so on it. hopefully that goes as planned.
going to order up a novak cable shifter for the TC. i was going to get the cable and a few brackets from a GC, but time vs cost showed the novak to be the better choice for now. probably have to 'adjust' the transfer case bracket to work with the 545rfe but ill wait and see on that.
i have a set of GC 5.7 exhaust manifolds in the garage but im leaning towards getting a set of the BBK shorty headers for it. just to let it breathe
see there the budget beings to stretch. i have a tera trans mount left over from my hemi project but unless i go with their belly up pan im going to have to fab a mount up. for less than the 459+ ship they want for that belly pan, i am leaning towards doing a TMR skid with maybe a 2" drop and a fabbed in removable trans/tc mount. total cost.$400. that way you would end up with the ability to drop the t/c skid independently of the trans. i have this same style set up in my LJ but my TC skid is crazy beef, custom built by KORE. i truly love that the T/C skid plate is sitting in the garage and the drive train is in without it
i am toying with the idea of getting a 05 ram harness and deciphering the wiring on the living room floor or just ordering a harness from chris for this project. i got all the pin outs from my dealer friend yesterday for the 00 tj 02 tj 05 tj and 05 ram clusters and ECMs. they are sitting on the table now.
im deciding which 4" lift to get, truly dont want to spend more than 500 on the basic lift kit. thinking either R/C or Zone right now. might grab a set of adjustable uppers for the F & R. saw a set on ebay for 240. complete 4" with adj uppers for 750, thats fair.... Ill take suggestions on the 4" kit. im not budgeted for a currie short arm or anything like that right now. ill even take a good condition 4" lift that i can refinish for it.
ill post some pics here in the next few days...
Jesus. This is what heaven on 4 wheels looks like.
I've never been poor, only broke. Poor is a state of mind. Broke is a condition brought on by Jeep ownership and a heavy right foot.
