XJ starter work in a TJ?

i made a post yesterday about my starter crapping out, and instead of shelling out 150 bucks on a new one, i thought i might take a chance and go to the pull apart here in Columbia. there aren't any wranglers in the yard, but there is like 10 Cherokee's. would an XJ starter bolt right up into my TJ? both have straight 6's so it should be very similar if not the same right?? its only 11 bucks at the pull apart

^It could be that Chrysler just got them from a different parts vendor.

i might bring my starter to the pull apart today and compare to one on an XJ, see if anything differs between the two.

You might want to talk to a local electrical rebuilder. I can get rebuilt starters or alternators for $50 all day long for my Chevys and about $60 for my Jeeps. They come with life-time warranty - as long as I can keep the mud out of them

I just changed the starter on my '00 XJ a few weeks ago and I compared it to the starter on my '97 TJ and they were slightly different for sure. I don't mind taking a peak underneath maybe even snapping a few pics of them for you if that'll help.
