Would this rust scare you?

I'm looking at a 2003 Rubicon. It is in fantastic shape - inside and out. However there is some rust underneath. Take a look at the pictures and let me know what you think. It was a New York resident for the first 4 yrs so I'm sure the salt help this issue.

But, hammer the frame (literally with a hammer) in front of where it bends up in the back. If the hammer goes through, or if the frame feels soft you have an issue.

Yeah from the shots you have here I don't see any real issues.

looks fine!

Often the worst rust is from the inside out. Reach into the holes in the frame and see if you feel rust chunks. If there is, you should also be able to get a feel on how much has rusted away. The exterior stuff you show isn't bad.

looks good to me. in fact it looks a lot like the underside of my jeep

Doesn't look bad at all. Nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the advice. I feel quite a bit better and will be taking a second look tomorrow. Hopefully I will be a new jeep owner soon.

Double check where the upper rear control arms mount. Otherwise it looks like every other vehicle in New England.

looks like all the vehicles in the rust belt. nothing to worry about

That looks about the same as my '06 LJ that spent most of its time in VT. The worst rust I could find was on the frame where the skid plate mates to the frame rails. The salt from the road must get in there and no wash away.

If you get it, I'd drop the skid and check for rust.

The time now is 04:33 PM.
