Wont Go into Gear

As i pulled off the highway yesterday, i pulled it out of 5th gear, then i went to put it into another gear as i made a turn and it would not go into gear, so i tried another gear, and then another and then i just pulled over, now the stick will move side to side, and it rolls freely but it will not go into gear, im goign to drop the tranny tonight and try and figure it out (my dad used to build trannys, and he thinks it might be the something with the overdrive not lining up right and its not lettign it go into gear)

anyone had this problem before, its a 97 5 spd

If you have had no hints of clutch issues or shifting problems prior to this...
then a tear down will be a "fun" adventure to solve the mystery.

I'm guessing you have already done the easy stuff, like making sure the clutch hydraulic fluid is full, inspecting clutch linkage, and checking transmission fluid quality/levels to find any possible clues.

I just got done replacing the clutch on mine - dropping the transmission/t-case combo was a good bit of work!

Good luck with quickly finding the problem and the solution.

I wonder if it could be one of the shifter forks.

One of my wheeling buddies has an eighties-something XJ with a weak five speed. His transmission is worn to the point that the shifter forks pop out of place if he tries apply any significant pressure to shift it.
